Almost Boasted to a Crisp, It is Believed . of Its Torture by Bullets from a Eifle. An agonized shriek mingled with the harp report of a Winchester rifle call-ud call-ud for the craning of necks and an assemblage as-semblage of policemen at six o'clock this morning and a few momenta later the intersection of Fifth South and Main streets was choking with a crowd of people. A tragedy had occurred and while one of the principals to it was a dumb beast it was none the less ' deplorable. It appears that at 6 o'clock the driver of the butcher wagon was crossing the thoroughfare unconscious of the fact that a danger line was drawn in the prostration of an electrio wire after which the lineman was looking. Put ting the lash to his animal the driver sped on until the treacherous wires were encountered, at which juncture they coiled around the limbs of the bellowing bel-lowing beast and the driver, shocked by the spectacle got down to disentangle him. No sooner did he touch the beast, however, than he staggered backward with the electrio current burning in his own veins. The horse had fallen to the earth like a dead thing, and was , literally parching to ashes when some one found a scantling and lifted it to its hoofs. Its doom had been Bealed, however, and removing it to a barn In the rear of Main street its tortnre was ended by the bullets from a Winchester. ' This is what gave rise to the rumor that some one hud been shot. An incident of the eoisode was the lighting of a dove on the fatal wire about the same time. It never quivered quiver-ed btu fell to the ground as dead as an obsolete language. For the horse it is understood tnat a bill has been rendered render-ed to the company. |
