Show A PKOTKNT Forwarded to Washington by the City Council. The city council, through its special committee, consisting of Mayor Scott and Con noil men James, Hall and Pembroke, Pem-broke, has forwarded to Washington the following protest: Salt Lake City, March 19, 1890. The undersigned, a committee appointed ap-pointed by the city council of Salt Lake City,at the regular meeting of the council, coun-cil, March 18th, respectfully represent, that having information that legislation is being urged before congress to convert con-vert the Woman's Industrial IInio building in this city into a general government gov-ernment building, beg respectfully to represent that there are most serious objections to the scheme. First It would be an unprovoked wrong to the government and to the institution in-stitution founded in charity and for the public good, and which is as yet but half tried. Secend The sight is entirely impracticable, imprac-ticable, being nearly six sevenths of a mile from the present ollluial and business busi-ness center of the city. Third The building is entirely unlit for such a purpose, and cannot be remodeled re-modeled in a way to moet the requirements. require-ments. Fourth The inconvenience to our people by making such an arrangement, wonld be intolerable and would increaso as the city shall expand. Hence, we beg in the name of the people of this city to most respectfully protest against the consummation of a scheme that would be looked upon here as a public disaster. We bog further to say that the business of the United States urgently requires a building in the city, and in our judgment judg-ment five hundred thousand dollars will be needed for the purpose. |
