Show FKAKKl I, RISU TO DEATH. A Train 1)ih)i- Down a .Miiuulaiu at the Itille of 133 Miles nn Hour. Columbia. S. 0., June 2a. The wreck on the Spartanburg & Ashevillo railroad Wednesday, as described by an eye witness, was one of the most fearful rushes to destruction on record. It is calculated hv comparing the time the train left Saluda with the time at which Kngineer Tunstall'n watch stopped that the train was going at the rate of 135 miles an hour when tho track spread and threw the twocnginesdown tho mountain side. They plunged down 3-15 feet, tearing up great trees in their path. Tunstall stuck to his engine en-gine until it turned over twice, when he was thrown on his head and his neck broken. The cars were loaded with coal and w-ere top heavy. It is said that the engineers have repeatedly protested pro-tested against bringing such heavy coal trains down this fearfull grade. |
