Show AMEN LAND OWNKKS: The bill to prevent alien landlords from acquiring title to lands in this country will probably meet with popular popu-lar favor. According to the report of the house committee on judiciary European Eu-ropean noblemen, principally English-men, English-men, absolutely own about twenty-one million acres of land in the United Slates, muinly in tho western portion of the country. Through investments in railroad and land bonds these alien capitalists control probably 100,000,000 acres of laud. ' English syndicates tire also buying up the best paying properties proper-ties in tho largo cities breweries, distilleries, dis-tilleries, mills and manufacturing establishments estab-lishments of all kinds aud forming combinations and trusts. The trust system, which is contrary to public policy and against which there has arisen a universal denunciation, is an English invention and was brought to this country along with English capital. The ev ils of alien land ownership are practically illustrated in Illinois, whei-3 an English subject, named Scully, living in England, owns 80,000 acres which he has leased to au ignorant foreign tenantry from whom he receives $200,000 per annum. Tho people of Illinois have for years protested against this system of absentee ab-sentee landlordism, and wo believe that the Illinois legislature has passed a law against any future alien laud ownership within the boundaries of that state. There are other cases similar to that of Scully in other states, and in each instance the people are indignant that such a state of affairs should any longer be permitted to exist. "This , aggressive foreign capital," says tho oommittce, "is not confined to the lands it has purchased, but overleaping over-leaping its . boundaries, has caused hundreds of miles of the public domain to be fenced up for tho grazing of vast herds of cattle and set at deliancc the rights of the honest but humble .settler." .set-tler." ' The figures given by the committee as to, aliiin , laud owners are simply astounding. as-tounding. If English investments con-tintio con-tintio at tho present rate England will in a few years virtually own this country, and to a large extent dictate its politics and control its legislation. - Now is the time to check tho impending evil, and to do it some such legislation as is proposed pro-posed iu the anti-alien landlord act seems absolutely necessary. The judiciary committee has evidently very carefully considered the matter, aud in its report says that the proposed bill is a declaration against absentee landlordism. Every one knows that that is one of the greatest evils a country can be cursed with. Tho bill requires that, beforo a foreign-born person per-son can acquire title to lands iu this country bo must become be-come a naturalized cilizen. This is to apply to tho future, aud will not affect any titles acquired by aliens prior to the passage of the bill. The committee gives iiUoraucc to the sentiment sen-timent that every land owner iu the country should pay allegiance to tho United States. This sentiment will bo iudorsed by every American patriot. Iu all probability this timely measure will be passed by tho present congress. |
