A railway rail-way from Alexamlretta to the Persian gulf is once more spoken of, A wealthy syndicate which thinks the enterprise will yield large protits WilTat once be-i be-i gin the construction of the line. The cost was put down, niauy years ago, at J ,10,000,000, but it is thought that only alf that amount will uow bo required, for the estimates then wore placed upon very different engineering and contracting con-tracting work to that which experience and the progress of invention place at the service of modern enterprise. There is also a plan which would be collaterally necessary for making the Euphrates' navigable for steamers at all seasons of the year. The cost of this would not exoed $1, COD, 000. |
