Nebraska is the original high license slate.' For nearly ten years the saloons in the larger cities have been paying $1000 per -year license, and those in the towns and villages have been assessed at $"00. The money goes to the support of the schools. Omaha thus receives $sr0,000 a year for educational educa-tional purposes. The saloons are all under police regulation, and in every respect the high license law has been demonstrated a grand success. It now prevails in a majority of the states. The campaign in Nebraska . has caused a general dullness iu business throughout the state, aud especially iu the larger cities. cit-ies. Popple are afraid to make investments invest-ments or branch out in busiuess until this questiou is settled deliuitcly. While some fear that prohibition will carry, and consequently depreciate real estato valuos and depress busiuess as it has done in Iowa and Kansas, others maintain main-tain that the results iu these two slates will have a beneficial effect in Nebraska, Ne-braska, and couvluce a majority of the people that high-license is the only proper method of handling the liquor questiou.
