The contest for the Kentucky scnat'irship is attract-ing a good deal of ntlciiiinii in Wash-ingloii- . It is taken for granted, of course, that Mr. Carlisle will l.c elected and there is a good deal of astonish-ment that there should he auv opposi. lion to him. Assta'e I in the dispatches frequently, it is the universal wish of democratic lemloi here that Carlisle should remain in the house; but a he has entered I lie contest for the souator-shi- p and d flared himself h candidate, of course his will, is yielrc I to and every democrat now wants him to win. It would have pleased the democrats much more if he hail consented to re-main in tl o house, but u iw that he has formally announced bis candidacy and expressed a urolerenco lo goto the sen-al-thero is but owe vvi.h among riemo-ir.it- s here, and that is that he should win. It is a preat disappointment lo his friends. Tie,' piodicl that he will lie buried in thu senate; that he will not he the great and commanding figure In that body that he is in Iho house. Of course thcio surface predictions me not to be tikcn ceriously. John (triftin Carlisle cannot lie buried in any iodv t.K.....i.i ,lii.u (.,nlwnuP.tO..untu.. ......... u. . . riinTi, 11V 19 IUll one of (ho premier Americans in intellectual qualilicatiou and wheth-er a member of the town council of Ijcxington, Ky a snuator of the United States, a nieniber of the house of representative, chief justice of the supremo conn or president of the United States, hu is bound to make himself felt. Carlisle is one of the greatest intellectual combinations that has come to tho surface in Americaa lite during the last quarter of a ecu-Inr- If he goes to the senate, which he probably will, it will not take him very long to become one of the loaders in that body. I If he is nol transplanted to the aenato hn will try to be the speaker of tho next house. It is understood here that his family, as well as friends, prefertlint he should remain in the house and really his own inelinatioi i are to remain there; but he has given way to the opinion of his friends in Kentucky and gone into the tight for the senatorship. There are a number of strong men in Carlisle's district, most of them friend of his, who are anxious lo roine to congress. Of course as long as Carlisle chooses to remain in the house none of them would think of op-posing him. But he feels that he IB in their way and depriving thmn of an op-portunity, and, in couseqiience, with Ids usual g Hid nature, ho has yielded to solicitations and entered tho contest for the scnatorship. . i Th. light will probably narrow down lo Carlisle, Lindsay and the present governor, Buckner. Judge Lindsay, from all accounts, is a very able mail, an eloquent orator, a scholar and a statesman, lie would make a splendid senator. Mr. Breckinridge was mentioned Tivr the scnatorship when Mr. Beck died, and lias a number of, friends who tire still insisting that ho' hIijuIiI enter the race, but Mr. Breckcuriugis who Is the nn V, loal friend, perhaps, thai Mr. Carlisle has, will not enter the contest a long as Carlisle Is a candidate. Mr. Breckinridge has a brother in the state Semite a very influential man, and if he should evcniiially enter the tight, in the event of a deadlock, his chances of car-rying oil' the honors would Imi consid-ered very good. The general feeling here is 'that either Carlisle, Breckin-ridge, or Lindsay should be elected, that none of the others ' mentioned are quite big enough to take Beck's place. T!IK FIELD IIF SI'OHT.
