Show THE RED wing WING OF BINGHAM the first mineral location made in the camp of bingham the old reliable was recorded over thirty years ago since which time its mines have been accredited with a production of over forty millions of dollars in tha precious metals the values being in lead silver gold and copper and still in the estimation of eminent mining experts who have carefully examined the leading producers of this section during the past year the camp has been but barely scratched in its development and operation as the mining of former years was largely confined to grass root dio digging as it was near the surface that the best bodies of high grade silver and lead and oxidized ores were found the mammoth zones of sulphide ores disclosed at greater depth being 11 practically valueless until within the past few years as formerly this mineral could not be worked and handled bandied at a profit now however with new appliances in milling and improved imp roved methods in mining together with an advance in lead and copper quotations bingham has been bee given a anew new lease on life and future operations promise greater things for the district than it has ever before been able to at a point almost in the center of the thrifty town which is the of this richly mineralized section in the early history of the red wing aggregation it was a producer of high grade ore from near the grassroots grass roots how much will never be exactly known as the ground was worked at intervals by owners lessees lessels les sees and in such a manner that no uninterrupted records were kept but the total is estimated up into the many thousands the morris ground alone now included in the group being accredited with an output of and it is learned that this small fortune came from near the grassroots grass roots being represented by high grade ore only the large volumes of low grade mineral suitable for concentration being left standing in the workings ready for extraction by the shenew hew company which can take it out and transform form it into a marketable atrall product expense and at a handsome profit at the mouth of the red wing tunnel THE REVIEWS representative was taken under the guidance of foreman fred lewis and conducted through the workings of the property this thi S was at the entrance of tunnel no 2 through which them the mine ine is being largely worked at the present time as this gives an easy outlet for the large quantities of mineral being taken from the jumbo which is situated between this level and tunnel no 1 above 5 the writer has seen and ore chutes large ones and small ones but rarely has it been his good fortune to inspect a body of ore of such splendid proportions as is shown in the jumbo in the red wing which in size and appearance more closely resembles the famous emma in the old jordan galena mine than any other body of ore extant in bingham mines and while this chute of ore has not been fairly opened as yet it gives promise of great things when its size and dimensions have been fully ascertained at this writing however it is showing up in a most gratifying manner the ore chimney so far as explored being forty feet in height sixty feet wide and sixty feet in length on the strike of the vein 4 41 4 4 n ab nb N r 0 4 T RED WIN WING MINE MARKHAM GULCH BINGHAM chronicle even in its most prosperous days A few days ago a representative of THE MINING REVIEW had the pleasure of inspecting one of the prospective bonanza propositions of this thia prolific camp the red wing the property in question embraces within its environments some of the oldest locations recorded in the district and recent developments would indicate that in due time this ground will rank among the heavy producers of the camp and that it will follow closely in the lead of such mines as the highland boy the united states and the dalton lark the red wing group of eleven claims is is located on the north side of markham gulch adf bu t a few hundred feet from where the into main bingham canyon the whole being substantially ly timbered with heavy square sets while in the further development of the ledge the workings have been run further into the hill for a distance of f feet e e t one pleasing feature of exploration in the jumbo beier being that neither wall has yet been encountered either in the crosscutting cross cutting of the vein nor in the up raising on the ore just now the company is materially enlarging its working force and foreman lewis stated that before the of this month he will have at least twenty five men at work in in the mine twenty of whom will be breaking down ore the aver average acre to tho the man being from six to seven tons daily most of the rock being a concentrating product of which four and a half tons can be reduced into one at the mill in bingham canyon at the mouth of markham gulch the resulting concentrates cen being valued at 20 a ton after smelting smelling sm elting charges have been paid although cutting through the ore bodies there are streaks of shipping ore carrying metallic values of 60 per cent lead from 40 to 50 ounces in silver and 5 in gold to the ton besides a fair percentage in copper in addition to the main red wing wina 11 vein CONTINUED ON PAGE EIGHT THE REDWING OF BINGHAM BINO HAfl CONTINUED FROM PAGE FIVE which has been opened in a number of places outside of the jumbo there are three other parallel ledges upon which but little more than surface work has been done these 4 A U y REDWING MILL IN BINGHAM CANYON three ore zones the columbia the silver hill and the hosford will be uncovered at depths varying from to feet vertically by no 3 tunnel which in its course besides exposing the red wing vein at a considerable depth will pross cut these three metal bearing belts in a manner which will prove beyond a doubt their real merit and productiveness even now the hosford is a paying proposition as only last week the lessee of the surface workings on this ground made a shipment of high grade ore to the salt lake market from tunnel no 2 in the red wing the ore is conveyed to the wagon road in the canyon below through urh a chute which is feet in length from tle the mouth of which it is dumped automat automatically itally into wa wagons crons when it 1 i hauled to the mill only about feet distant this mill which is presided over b by y superintendent erin henry kemper had only a daily capacity of about forty tons before its recent purchase by the red wing company within the past month however this capacity has been been increased to tons daily by the addition of a crusher and new rolls the equipment of the plant also including two filfly tables and four jigs the crusher and rolls being of sufficient capacity to handle from to tons of crude material every twenty four hours it being 11 only necessary to add niom more jigs and tables to enable the works as a whole to treat this amount of ore every day which will soon be done the eleven alaimo claim embraced in the red wing group are bounded on the west by will Strick leys montezuma Alonte zuma mine a heavy producer of high grade ore and on the east by elmer hills doughnut Tough nut whose productive 1 ness in the past has greatly helped to swell this gentleman s bank account while the south extension is partially covered by dan clays julia dean one of the phenomenally rich producers of the district the red wing is a contact vein with wi th a north and south strike and a west dip between lime and quartzite the latter formation being the foot wall of the ledge the ore as a general thing occurring in large chutes and chimneys in the lime althou although 11 oh the richest zones are generally found in the foot wall country countr ahe the ote ore usually being a splendid concentrating ratina proposition carrying an excess of iron which makes it a desirable product at the smelters shelters sm elters the other three parallel veins already alluded to are of practically the same formation so far as proven by development work and it is believed that with more extensive exploration they will make as good a showing as has been disclosed in the main red wing vein in addition to the ledges already enumerated another vein has been uncovered in the red wing workings between tunnels nos 1 and 2 from which a good account is anticipated in the future this is nothing more than a large body of copper bearing beacino ore sixty feet in width from which over tons have been shipped by the company during the past year the mineral selling on control essays assays showing values of eight per cent copper twenty five to fifty ounces silver and from 66 6 to 14 in gold to the ton later on it is the intention of the company to work this vast zone of copper in a thorough manner as it is largely a shipping promos proposition which can b be e handled to advantage and at a profit the red wing company began operations in markham gulch g in august 1897 its hol holdings dinus at that time were limited but during in the past year they have been increased until now the association owns eleven choice claims some of which are regarded as beino being of the cream of the camp since actual work was inaugurated inaus by the company tons of crude ore from the mine has been marketed and settlements have been received for tons of concentrates nearly every consignment sign ment showing an excess of iron the metal contents of the ore and concentrates as shown by the books of the company being pounds of copper pounds of lead ounces of silver and thirty ounces gold the V v V it flashlight OF A PORTION OF THE JUMBO IN RED WING MINE whole being valued at which has more than paid all expenses of development so far and which leaves a cash balance in the
