rapidly and is attaining such permanency and magnitude that it will vill not be long before this section of the west will take rank as one of the greatest wealth producers of this intermountain region re ion sible for the construction of numerous railroad lines with their spurs and branches the heaviest traffic today with utah railroad com panics coming from our mines in the way of ore shipments to sampler and smelter while another important item is in freight in the way of coal mine and mill timbers and mine and mining machinery tonnage is what the every mining camp so that the railroad system of utah today compares most favorably with those of other and older states and these roads with their eastern western and northwestern connections with their tributaries tributa ries and branches to various mining camps have made of salt lake a great mining center as well as the commercial metropolis of this in X WL N LA W UTAH LAKE UTAH SOENE SCENE ON THE OREGON SHORT LINE fortunately for those engaged in mining affairs there is hardly a mining camp of prominence within the environments of our commonwealth but that enjoys excellent railroad facilities and it can be truly said that the railroads did not make the camps but that our great min mineral e ral regions made it pos railroad companies are looking for this our mining camps have given them without this resource they could not exist and it has been so heavy and the increase has been so steady that the roads from small and unimportant lines jines have branched out sending their feeders into almost eve every ry canyon and ancl into almost 5 ter mountain region the pioneer road of utah and one that has done much in the up building of the state is the oregon short line whose main line extends from frisco in the then through idaho to its terminal at huntington oregon the extension of the road south from salt lake to frisco years ago was necessitated by the heavy business guaranteed by the horn silver mine at that place and the extensive traffic coming from the grand old camp of pioche in lincoln county nevada the building in of this line resulting in the substantial g growth crowth of numerous towns alono along its route included in the list being provo which now ranks as fourth or fifth in size and import importance ance among the cities of utah later on a branch was built to ironton in tintic gintic mining district and it ib was but a few years later that this branch was further extended so as to take in the important camps in this sect section lon and eureka mammoth and silver city were thus brought into direct touch with the outside world the garfield beach and stockton branch was a feature of the system before tintic gintic camps felt the quickening influence of railroad communication with salt lake and this little line is still doing excellent business in ore shipments from stockton and ophir and in summer traffic to garfield beach one of the popular watering places of the west at fairfield the oregon short line connects with the salt lakee lake mercur road which in its scenic attractions almost outrivals out rivals the mountain roads of switzerland while this picturesque line is constantly crowded with business and has long been regarded as a paying proposition but still with its mainline main line calling into use all of its available rolling stock and with its branches doing all the traffic that it can stand the oregon short line is still anxious to get into new territory and with this in view the company has encouraged cou raged the building of the utah pacific from milford on to the great southwest with a strong probability that eventually it will give this city an outlet to the coast and that it will hel help p to join salt lake and los Anc angeles reles by bands of steel the rio grande western is another important factor in the up building of the material interests of utah and this road has done much to advance our varied interests and especially so in its determination to do business in our leading mining camps its main line stretches from ogden to grand junction clear across the state from east to west at ogden it connects with the southern pacific and the oregon short line for the west and northwest and with the union pacific for the east at grand junction the traveler on this line has the choice of two roads to denver pueblo colorado springs and the east the I 1 D R G and the colorado midland it is one of the best scenic lines with its connections in the world and it winds through some of the grandest passes and magnificent magni ficen mountain canyons to be found on this continent the B R G W is also prolific in its branches and feeders its tintic gintic blanchem branch embraces all of the big mining camps of this magnificent mineral district it has the only line running into bingham the old reliable from salt lake through parleys parley s canyon it crosses the divide into park city the home of the ontario the silver king the daly west and other great dividend paying mines its provo canyon line but recently completed and opened reaches into heber city and will do much towards the redemption of the region into which it penetrates its longest branch however is its san pete feeder which runs through the granary of utah and which opens a market for the m mines ines of gold mountain and of mar marysvale Marys ayale vale and as this line is being extended with no objective point stated itkis it is reasonable to believe that it will ultimately reach the coast intimately associated with the R G W is the salt lake los angeles road which connects salt lake with saltair Sal tair the great bachin bathing resort on the south shore of the great salt lake the fame of this resort has been beral heralded hed the world over it is one of the att factions of the west and the road with L A w 4 4 afia I 1 V i ay t A SALTAIR THE GREAT PLEASURE RESORT this business alone does an immense traffic in the summer time and is a permanent enterprise even evea should it never extend into new territory the union pacific should not be overlooked in this article as it has many miles of track in this state this is the great overland route from salt lake and ogden to denver omaha and chicago it has close traffic relations with the strictly utah roads and connects with the lines stretching out into the westi west and northwest it has a branch line into park city and does its share of the busk busai ess of this western country in Incon connect tion with the 0 S L it has been one of the pioneers of utah and the west and for a long time it was the only rail connection between salt lake and the east it is a great line in more ways than one and the state is largely indebted to it for its past and present prosperity connecting with the oregon short line at nephi and the rio bio grande western at manti the little san pete valley railroad opens up a tributary country that is rich in its coal deposits and agricultural resources the line is a short one but still it has its mission and is working in harmony in the far reaching plan for the furtherance of up building another little road which does a big and rushing business in the summer time in the salt lake ogden which runs between salt lake and farmington them tha company owns the lagoon a popular summer and pleasure resort which is located a few miles north ot this city just this side of the northern terminal terme e of the road the objective point of which is ogden 0 za den I 1 statistics show that utah has been more progressive in the way of railroad building during the past few years than any of the western states and there is hardly any portion of the east that has been more active in this respect the requirements of a growing country have demanded this the output of our mines have been the chief ulous in encouraging the reaching out of railroad lines which has been further encouraged by the increased production of farms and ranches by the establishment of the sugar industry by heavy coal and stone shipments and by the fostering and establishment of innumerable industries all of which in the aggregate gre gate have combined combined to give utah the name of being one of the best of railroad states and now that a magnificent union depot is to be built in this city the outlook for prosperous times in railroad circles is more encouraging than ever before |
