Show BAG HOUSE OF THE U S bulletin bingham utah at an expenditure of more than the united states smelting smelling Sm elting company has completed its new bag house designed to prevent the escape of poisonous gas ana am fumes from the monster smelting smelling sm elting furnaces in bingham k junction the bag house is now in successful operation and frees the smoke from all injurious elements avoiding damage to the surrounding country the bag house consists of a substantial brick building feet ion long 58 feet wide and 60 feet high it contains 2080 bags each bag being 32 feet 6 inches in length and 18 inches in diameter the smoke from the lead blast furnace is sucked out of the flue by a fan and forced into the bag house about twelve feet above the ground round level there is a steel floor covering the entire space between the walls in this floor at regular intervals about two feet apart holes are cut eighteen inches in diameter A pipe eighteen inches in diameter and six inc elies long extends upward from each hole the bags which are of cotton are slipped over ver the end of this pipe and tied with wire the upper end of the bag is then supported from the roof the smoke entering underneath the steel floor passes pas bes up through the numerous open ings into the bag and can house and passes through the cotton fabrics this passage of the smoke through cotton fabrics takes out all the solid matter and soot so th that at the gas leaving the bag house is as clear as air the fan pumping the gas into the bag house is driven by an electric motor which receives power from a special general electric h p steam turbine in the power house in case this steam turbine should be shut down for repairs the power to run the motor can be furnished from another dynamo it is thus possible to keep the bag house in operation continuously and there is no chance that a shutdown shut down in the power house would stop the operation of the bag house |
