Show rawhide camp the young giant of nevada freeman morningstar one of the leading mining operators of salt lake and president and general manager of the nevada united mines corporation whose valuable holdings are located in the new but already popular camp of rawhide nevada returned a few days ago from this inviting section of the battle born state having put in a period of three weeks in n western nevada iv visiting i rawhide morningstar city and other localities in which with his associates le he is heavily interested in an interview with the mining review regarding rawhide its present status and future possibilities ties mr morningstar ling star said 1 I was wonderfully impressed impressed with the splendid plen did surface indi cautions of the country wherein the new and already fa famous camp rawhide is situated when I 1 beheld it on the e morning of july 0 1906 before the north of the other and which now bears their name to the west is a row of medium and high hills where numerous strikes of L h agh g grade ore have been made in rapid succession notable among them being the royal the tiger and West mier including mccloud hill with its score or more of leasers leaders lea sers first locations made myself and party of three prospectors with two large teams went into the rawhide district on the afternoon of july ath 1906 and located twenty three claims on what is now popularly known as the bullion bonanza lode just north of baloon hill we remained there six weeks doing location 40 rawhide nevadah looking northeast t cation was made in that section and chave ve been en with more and more pleased yo w new district on every visit I 1 have nce e made nevertheless I 1 had simply limply conception caption cep tion of the wonderful richness of ae e locality aliby until the brothers r in thirteen chiz teen months later uncovered 1 e piously fabulously rich contact vein on the west ia I 1 de of what is now known as baloon hill bill few days daya later ter the grutt brothers made jt air r sensational strike on the hill just on the north side the fiill hillwi are literally peppered with holes and even the draws and flat places between the hills have scores of shafts and these are as close together as one might expect in an oil field to see derricks on the principal leases they are working three shifts day and night I 1 and ina inasmuch as many leasers leaders work t their heir own diggings ono one can hear the heavy shots going at all hours of the day and night work saw a soul during that time and it was not until august last thirteen months later that the rush started now however the country is located for a radius of at least ten miles wide w ide by fifteen miles long I 1 am confident that our property is going to make one of the big mines of the camp but our properties have not been opened up to any great extent as yet owing to the fact that our energies have been we well 11 divided between our copper proper property ty in the yerington district and our gold property at from now on we shall push the development of our rawhide property ahead of everything else and for the reason that we believe that it merits full attention so much free gold boid 1 I have never seen so much free gold and there are a large number in any camp of very wide contact veins carrying immense quantities of very rich milling ore to say nothing of the quartz ledges which carr carry sensationally rich free gold I 1 have tallied talked with a large number of leadin leading mining in engineers and mining men of goldfield tonopah and other camps whom I 1 met in rawhide and almost without exception they have stated that the showings already made are not only wonderful but in many instances the formation is identical with some of the best properties at goldfield and tonopah To and in their opinion it will make a greater camp than either I 1 do not believe the most enthusiastic man among them expressed an opinion which will not sooner or later be verified by the actual production of the yellow metal the formation is ideal for big ore bodies to live in and the richness of the country is easily proven by the wealth of the placers in almost every gulch I 1 believe it would be hard to exaggerate the future possibilities of the camp it is young less than four months make a mans eyes and mouth both water large pieces of wire gold often hang together in the pan the town of rawhide the main street is about two miles long and rawhide avenue also has many business buildings twenty eight saloons were running january 1st ast and by the way they are multiplying I 1 presume the number now is close onto fifty many of them are illuminated inside and out by gasoline lamps and the result is that main street is well lighted at night rawhide already has many large stores and mercantile houses which carry nearly everything to be found in places ten times its size the camp has a fine post office a fine two story bank building and three quite large hotel buildings are nearing completion there are also three regular news stands the regent club is the pride of the camp 0 i ti ff 4 t AA pa its t rawhide nevada looking southwest old but it is certainly one of the lustiest dustiest lust iest of the many youngsters nevada has given to the mining world of late and leasers leaders are already working there on proven propositions sit ions and bonanzas in embryo leases on baloon hill thomas kearns of goldfield continued mr morningstar has three prominent leases on baloon hill and on the foothills to the south of mccloud hill has opened up properties from which he has made several shipments of very high grade ore some twenty tons in his last shipment brought while two sacks of ore brought 1500 and a dozen sacks of a previous shipment brought his contact vein is about sixteen feet wide three feet of which show astonishing values in free gold it is easy to get a fine panning almost anywhere in the camp but where the leaders leasers have opened up their properties to any extent bannings pann ings can be obtained which will fairly and includes in its membership nearly all of the leading mining and business men of the district the club has been established along lines similar to those of the famous montezuma club of goldfield the camp also has hasa its newspaper the rawhide rustler rustier which is improving right along water costs a barrel hay 60 per ton horse feed four cents per pounds but the farmers on from carson sinks and the upper mason valley are breaking roads into the camp and everything jin in the supply line will soon be lowered in price already they are bringing in and selling be beet ef by the quarter at ten to twelve cents a pound an and d potatoes and farm produce will be brought in at very reasonable cost next summer and fall while water will be developed in the vicinity of the already plentiful supply ly at ai Dead horse wells rawhide will likely see a population of several thousand during the present year and its di distance stane from any other town and its otherwise fin fine 1 e location will certainly oner offer splendid advantages advantage S for its growth and prosperity lots centrally located on main alain street sell at from 2000 2000 to 2500 now the camp ot of rawhide is located in esmeralda county and is almost on a direct line between goldfield and fairview sixty miles from the former place and thirty five from the latter A great many mining men and engineers are now in rawhide principally from goldfield tono tollo pah colorado and utah and it will be an exceedingly lively district luring during the coming spring and summer I 1 formation and Gs the ore oce occurrences in rawhide district generally consist of par parallel aliel contact veins in porphyry the veins having a general strike northwesterly and southeasterly with a dip to the east As a rule the walls are well defined much aluch of the ore carries native gold in a free state and is beautiful to behold associated with the gold there is a certain amount of silver in the richest portions of the deposits the value of the ore is computed by the pound instead of by the ton and picture rock is exhibited on every hand the veins are invariably large and the milling ore would be considered high grade in iii almost every other camp I 1 am acquainted I 1 believe the camp will have a great future and our company will do what it can to add to its material worth and popularity |
