Show GREAT COPPER DISTRICT their output gives utah a rank of fourth in production utah stood fourth in rank among the copper producing states in 1906 blister copper to the amount of pounds was produced mainly from three important districts Bing bingham liam tintic gintic and frisco this output was less by pounds than that of of 1905 which amounted to pounds the mine production for the year exceeded the smelter production by over pounds of blister copper for the reason that a great amount of material received from the th e mines was not worked up during the year and at the end of the year there were stored at the smelters shelters sm elters ores and concentrates containing more than pounds of copper the chief cause of the decrease in smelter production was the failure of the new garfield smelter to handle as much material during the year as had been expected bingham district the bingham district in salt lake county is sixth in importance in the country the blister production of the district in 1906 fell somewhat below that of 1905 which was pounds the decrease being caused by lack of fuel and storage of ore at reduction works the smelters shelters sm elters south of salt lake city have h ave long been the subject of heavy claims for alleged injury to agriculture and as a result much money has been spent by operating companies in the effort to reduce the amount of sulphur in their smoke the local market for sulphuric acid is however extremely small and as the smelters shelters sm elters are not within profitable reach of market sto the east and south they th ey have found it cheaper to pay the damage claims than to make sulphuric acid for practically nothing A decision given by the federal court late in the year enjoined four smelt ing plants near murray and bingham junction from operating on an ore or combination of ores containing any arsenic or more than 10 per cent of sulphur tintic gintic district the tintic gintic district at eureka juab county is the second copper camp in the tha th a e state and the tenth in the country the camp is essentially a precious metal camp with copper and lead as accompanying 0 metals of importance but in varying quantities the copper production of the district in 1906 was derived in large part from the centennial eureka eureka hill and mammoth companies but nearly every producing mine in the camp added more or less copper to the output of the district the average yield of all the ores of the district is about 2 per cent of copper but certain ores yield much more there is no smelter in the immediate vicinity of the tintic gintic camp at present although it was reported near the close of 1906 that one was to be erected there in the near future the th e old mills of 0 the district which depended largely on amalla amalgamation mation have been abandoned because of their fail use to save baser metals the new mills make a concentrate for shipment but the greater part of the ore is shipped direct to the smelters shelters sm elters frisco district the frisco district in beaver county made a decided gain in its copper output for 1906 but a considerable portion of the production did not reach the form of blister copper during tire the year the bulk of the output was derived from the cactus mine figures 0 given in the published reports ot of the company show that the cactus mine yields a lower percentage of copper than any other large mine outside the lake superior region low gold and silver ues aes however somewhat reduce the cost of production per pound and high grade ore has been found in some places the ore is concentrated about 10 into 1 and the product is shipped to salt lake smelters shelters sm elters the mill was enlarged in 1906 from tons to tons daily capacity other districts the little cottonwood district in salt lake county the park city mines the ophir district in tooele thoele county and the district in washington county were the principal contributors to the states copper production outside of the three principal districts in all but the last named of these smaller districts the copper is recovered incidentally to the production of other metals in the district however a small smelter was operated during the year and the black copper which it turned out was shipped east for refining small quantities of copper were produced in numerous other districts of the state an important deposit at copper mountain in boxelder Box elder county w was reopened in 1906 and began shipments in 1907 A report on copper production in 1906 prepared by mr L C graton geologist ot of the united states geological survey and published by the survey as an advance chapter from mineral resources of the united states calendar year 1906 11 contains statistics in regard to the copper output of utah and the other states and territories ri this chapter is now ready for distribution trib ution |
