Show some of the mines of tin gintic tintic tic district dietric t by WILL C HIGGINS I 1 there are a great many mining districts in this western country which are profitably operated part of the time at certain periods they are all activity which condition after a year or so chant changes to a time of depression and their popularity wanes almost to the vanishing point other camps there are which are always good their importance may he be lost sight of once in a while when some new and sensational find causes a stampede in the ranks of mining men Q but all the same they continue in their heavy production and in the payment 11 f dividends such a district is tintic gintic whose mines grow bigger and richer eve even when the sensational discoveries in distant camps peter out and which is always making good at the present time notwithstanding the blow the e mining industry has received ot late the several camps in tintic gintic district are receiving more than usual attention and tintic gintic stocks have been the most active and popular of any quoted on the local board it is not generally known but it is a fact that eighteen tintic gintic mines have found a place for themselves in the list of divi bend payers and the amount of their disbursements bur total up to the handsome sum of and nearly all of these are R FT 7 7 still on the producing and pa paying y i n g list li st while with the majority of these properties development has opened up ore bodies ot such mammoth proportions and of such high grade that it begins to look as if the district in point of future production is still in its infancy As a matter of fact several wonderful mines have been added to fintics cs list of bonanzas during the past two years and these now command the earnest ear n attention of the mining public the in vestor and the speculator in this list might be mentioned the colorado and the beck tunnel whose almost marv marvelous elom records during the brief period of their existence have been the wonder of the district and of the state as well THE COLORADO MINE the colorado mine on the east slope of godiva mountain tintic gintic dietr district let has made history fast within the last eighteen W will c Ii south hoisting works colorado mine photos by higgins geins new hoisting plant of beck tunnel months and as a dividend payer it has tew equals in the west this is an enterprise emanating from uncle jesse knight ot of provo the mine baline maker and yet it is only one of halt half a dozen propositions hacked backed hy by him which have made good during the past few years the colorado mining alining company owns a group of twelve claims and within its territory it covers the great colorado vein for a distance of feet AW S geological conditions the formation of the colorado consists of lime quartzite and porphyry the ore making in the gray dolomite lime in zones and bodies being a replacement in the lime the trend of the ore body is northerly and southerly and is continuous as shown by development and proven work in beck tunnel ground round almost the entire length of the companas comp anys property no narrow walls confine the great mineral wealth of the colorado mine As a matter of fact there are no walls to these huge deposits of ore which fill immense cavities in the lime and the extent of these chimneys of ci the precious metals have never yet been determined the ore is a silver and lead product and exists in the form of sand carbonates silver chlorides block and steel galena these deposits being of such size and so easily handled that a few men can easily break down the few hundred tons monthly required to pay running expenses and meet the regular dividend requirements one ot bt alk these shoots of ore is fifty feet wide and extends forty feet above the drift level and afta in the vast tonnage taken from this immense but very little waste was thrown over the dump colorado development in the beginning of work in the development i of the colorado mine a shaft was su sunk on the southern portion of the lode this shaft was sunk in the lime to a depth ot of feet and a drift run to the east for a distance of seventy feet when ore was encountered the workings were then run feet to the south following an immense body of ore the entire distance the tace face a aa the time of the visit of the writer the first fai st of the month being forty feet in width with a world of ore in sight in the newly disco ered cave above the face of the drift the ore body has been followed for a distance of thirty feet further from the end of this cave to the south end line of the colorado group the distance is feet it is sel dom doin that a mining company is hindered in its work by a superabundance super abundance of ore and yet this is the case with the colorado vor for some time the management in its eagerness to drift on the ore to its southern limit has been unable to make much progress owing to the fact that the mine product a sand carbonate keeps sliding down from a heights of twenty feet or more and instead of miners a greater number of muck ers are needed to move away this constant accumulation of dividend money and it would be almost as easy to run a dritt through a mound of sand as to penetrate the colorado ore body without being caved upon from the shaft north the drift has been run on the ore body a distance of feet and along the entire distance and in the face there is a large body of high grade sand carbonates and silver lead carbonates and a distance of 1000 or 1200 feet will be required to take the workings to the south end line of the beek beck tunnel group where the becks south workings in a body 1 of ore or e forty feet in width and twenty five feet in heigh heights th from co lorado colorado workings which were begun in december 1906 at least has been taken out in high grade ore and since that date the company has paid in dividends in addition to which it has made extensive improvements and added materially to its mine equipment the october output netted the company about less expense of mine operation seven hundred and fifty feet north ot of the colorado shaft and teet feet south of the beek beck tunnel end line a new hoisting plant has been installed and a double compartment part ment shaft with manway has been started this shaft is being sunk in the lime and on the first of the month had attained a depth of feet the expectation being that ore will be encountered on the foot level when drifts will be run north and south in pay dirt the intention being at the earliest possible moment to connect with beek beck tunnel workings for air and con ven lenience veni lence ence colorado equipment the south shaft of the colorado is equipped with a hendrie bolthoff 50 horse power hoist and an all ingersoll rand six drill air compressor here also the company has one of the finest and best equipped machine shops to be found in the district the north shaft is equipped with a hendrie bolthoff 50 horsepower single drum hoist air from the south hoist furnishes power for two ingersoll drills the company is giving employment to a force of about thirty five men and is shipping in the neighborhood of thirty tons of if ore daily with restrictions on production removed and with a larger force the output could easily be raised to or tons every twenty four hours the ore values range from 75 to a ton although some of the chloride ore will go 1000 ounces silver 35 per cent lead and from 2 to 5 in gold to the ton apeci jil 4 view at the iron blossom photos by bj will fill C higgins crown point hoist and dump men ore from the colorado often assays essays as high as ounces in silver gilver throughout the ore bodies there is hardly a pound of waste the beck tunnel mine the beek beck tunnel mine is another of the youthful marvels of tintic gintic district and is mill mi also another of the many successes in ing which have crowned the efforts of tesse jesse knight the beck tunnel group consisting ot of ten or eleven claims adjoins the domain of the colorado company on the north and covers at least feet of the extension of the colorado vein its north end line abutting upon the territory of the yankee con consolidated in addition to the colorado vein the beek beck tunnel group embraces two other known ore zones or ledges one known as the crown point vein and the other the yankee and humbug ore channel the latter cutting through deck beck ground well within its western sideline formation of the beck the formation of the beck ground is almost identical with that of the colorado geological conditions are practically and the the same with the exception that in certain portions of the ore body of the beck there are intrusions of a dry bony quartz which decrease the values of the certain extent the north workings ores to a of the mine were in this formation at the time of the visit of the wrier but the indications were that a few feet more would take thie the drift into ore bodies in the dolomite lime from which regular a gray high values can be expected and from which point the company will have 15 feet of excellent ground before getting to Us its north endline still the ore makes in this bony ground in the same massive bodies which characterize the mineral de positions in the workings towards the south endline of the group and it is confidently believed by superintendent roundy that the northern portion of the beek beck will open UP ID to such an extent that it will make even a bigger and better mine than is the colo rado do it if such a thing were possible development of the beck in the operation and ancl development of the beck tunnel a shaft was sunk feet north of the colorado endline at a depth of 0 feet a drift was run to the east a distance of I 1 feet where the ore channel channe I 1 was s encountered along this great body ot high gh grade ore a drift was run south to tife the beck colorado endline the workings being III il a continuous body of rich ore identical III n character to that taken from the south workings of the colorado mine for many feet along this ore deposit of timber four or five in width and six or seven in heigh heights th have been necessary to prevent the caving of the mine after the ore has been extracted and this fact will give some idea of the magnitude of this wonderful ore deposit some of the high grade ore from this portion of the mine assays essays as high as ounces in silver to the ton while the mine average is in the neighborhood of to to the ton from this portion ot the beek beck about in ore has been taken from which the company has disbursed in dividends a record that would be difficult for any mining t company to eclipse or even duplicate north from the shaft the company is drifting in ore and the vein has been followed in this direction for two or three hundred feet the ore body maintaining nearly TV R p F 4 L ji VIA I 1 S A great of ore ln in the south end of beck tunnel workings Abutting North endine endl ine of the colorado photo h 7 will C higgins regulation size but being of lower grade grada as stated above one thousand feet north of the old or south shaft the company is now low sinking a two compartment shaft and man manway way this shaft is down over feet and a drift W will ill soon be started if not already under way to be run to the east the expectation being that the ore channel will be encountered in that direction within a i distance of from to feet equipment of the beck the south shaft of the beek beck tunnel company is equipped with the first steam hoist ever operated by the old bullion beek beck champion mining company this is a single drum horsepower hoist with a history froni from the bullion beck mine after bringing to the surface millions in ore it was taken to tc the northern spy mine on the south end of the mountain from the spy it was taken over by the alaska mining company and later on it was removed to beek beck tunnel where it has done excellent service this hoist has handled millions in pay rock and has no kick coming because of the company it is keeping at the present time at the north shaft of the beck tunnel the company has put in an er hendrie bolthoff double drum hoist two eighty horsepower boilers and an in gerroll sergeant six drill air compressor ore house and other equipment everything at this plant is the best that money can buy the idea being that these works will handle a heavy and constant production beck tunnel production the beck tunnel company marketed twenty four cars of ore during the month ot of october the values ranging from to 1200 a car net after paying freight and smelting smelling sm elting charges and this production can be maintained for an indefinite period with only a small force employed the ore being mined in the beek beck the first of the month when the mine was being inspected by the editor of the mining review assayed from 25 to 30 per cent lead 30 ounces silver and about 2 in gold to the ton with shipping restrictions removed beyond a question the company would be making a much larger output and this increase may be looked for in the not distant future the management both as to the colorado and the beek beck has done little if any dead work every shift has been working on ore in both properties and follow yo your ur ore has been the motto adhered to in every instance no sinking on the vein has been done below the tunnel level and because of this fact there have been mose who have argued that the ores of these mines do not go dow down n development will prove this question however and yet it ii is the belief of old time mine managers and mining operators of the district that the colorado and beek beck mines will find gigantic ore deposits down to the 2000 or foot levels or as far down as these companies can go deep seated veins are the rule in the lime formation of tintic gintic district and such mines as the centennial eureka the gemini keystone the bullion beck the eu reka hill the mammoth the grand central and the lower mammoth have developed 0 greater and richer ore bodies at 1000 feet and down to the 2000 than were found S in the upper workings uncle jesse knight uncle jesse jes se knight is not an ordinary mining man As a matter of fact he is not looked upon as a mining man at all I 1 and yet he is a past grand master when it comes to making mines his is the gift that all might envy and but few possess when he says dig here and you will fine ore you can bank on the truth that ore is there uncle jesse puts extensive mine equipment on a prospect when there is not a pound of ore in sight and more he builds ore houses at the same time that he installs his hoisting plants so confident is he that lie he will have steady use for them in the near future those who have followed his lead have made money and not from stock sales and stock profits but from dividends and his only regret is that the timid have been frightened into sacrificing their holdings because of the recent flurry in all kinds of securities curi ties he does not believe in backing up tip his stocks in order to assist speculators he does not deal in stocks nor has he ever sold any of his holdings in the various companies in which he is president as far as we can learn his profits come from dividend disbursements and not in stock speculation and manipulation he is making mines all and any competent man can work for him no matter what his political or religious beliefs may be as long as he does good honest work and earns his pay other knight properties the interests of mr knight in tintic district include several other properties besides the colorado and beek beck tunnel in the list is the crown point joining the colorado on the south and east the crown point is equipped with a donkey hoist and a three compartment shaft is being sunk in the development of the group this shaft on the first of the month had attained a depth of feet and the bottom was in gray dolomite lime and dogtooth dog tooth spar in which |
