Show NEW MEXICO COPPER enterprise MINING REPORTER TRES PIEDRAS N M on tusas busas peak in the bromide mining district rio arriba county is located the tampa group of copper mines owned by the tusas peak gold copper mining company a close clase corporation of Alich michigan ign and wisconsin n sin capitalists with headquarters at manistee michigan the company is incorporated under the laws of new mexico with a capital stock of one million of which is intact in the treasury of the com pay pa y otto rosenfeld the resident director and treasurer of the company is in charge of the property and it is owing to his able and and conservative management that the property has attained its present excellent physical condition mr rosenfeld was associated with mining in the early days of colorado and has demonstrated by the good judgment shown in opening up the ore bodies of the tampa mine that he is the right man in the right place at the present writing the shaft on the tampa mine is down feet with the following work done at the different levels at the 50 foot level there is feet of cross cuts and drifts exposing a good body of 6 per cent copper carbonates which show strong indications of extending through to the surface feet of drifts at the foot level feet at the foot fool level feet at the aioo foot level and 60 feet at the foot level making it in all a total of 1400 feet of work accomplished up to the present time the sulphides sulp hides opened up in the foot level and extending on down to the foot level show assay values as high as 40 per cent bentin in copper and give an average of 6 per cent with small values in gold and silver the ore and formation resemble very much the great copper producing districts of arizona there has just been completed a new shaft house which has been erected on modern plans and up to date in every particular the hoisting equipment consists of one 50 horsepower boiler which furnishes power for the steam and friction hoist one no 6 cameron pump at the foot level and one 3 drill air compressor of the norfolk pattern the shaft house gives ample room for work with a boiler room adjacent the employed emp loyes are well taken care of in a combination bunk and boarding house feet in dimensions and the superintendents te ten office is feet on the 1st ast day of august 1906 the company broke ground for the erection of a leaching plant of one hundred tons capacity every twenty tour four hours the plant being about completed on the first day of february 1907 1607 the erection of the bufi building ding and installation of the machinery being under the of mr tracy formerly of newhouse utah mr tracy being thor hughly reliable and having had many years of experience in the erection of leaching plants believes that the bromide district is to become a second butte in the production of copper the plant is situated on the tu sas ri river ver about two miles from the tampa mine which necessitates hauling the ore by wagon for the present which will be eliminated in the near future as the company is figuring on an aerial tram to convey the ore from the mines to the mill for the present the company intends to treat the carbonate ore only as the sul aphides require roasting and will be taken up ul at a later day the first mill test was made on the ath of february under the direction of mr tracy which was successful in every way with the exception of a few trifles which are bound to occur in the starting of any new plant the ore after passing through an dodge rock breader is elevated by a belt conveyor to bins above the wild mill where it is pulverized to 20 mesh the ore is then conveyed to the leaching vat by means of a chute the vat taking five tons to the c harge charge A standardized solution of known strength is then run into the vat and agitated by compressed air and steam through a tw two o inch perforated lead pipe which converts the carbonate of copper to sulphate of copper in solution the ore and solution is then discharged into settling tanks of large capacity where the copper is precipitated in a metallic form after being filtered from the pulp the precipitant used is old scrap iron and steel placed in solution which at the same time is agitated by compressed air and heated by steam the precipitation takes about ten minutes the power by which the plant is operated consists of two 72 horsepower boilers and one 70 horsepower high speed engine also one leyner air compressor of large capacity the plant is supplied with water broin from a large spring about 1500 feet from the mill which is elevated by a gould triplex pump the power at the pump house is an electric motor the board of directors and stockholders of the tusas busas peak gold copper mining company are to be congratulated upon the excellent showing and manner in which things have been accomplished which is due to the untiring efforts of its resia resident ent manager and treasurer otto rosenfeld |
