Show BAKER AKER CITY OREGON 1 NOTES BY THOMAS E BURKE about eight years ago a small uon tion of eight traveling men started what is now the commercial mining company of portland their purpose was to develop a prospect on burnt river about thirty miles southeast of this city work to that end has been going on constantly in a small way under the management of W E king this year the prospect developed into a mine from which the output is now 1000 per day in free gold fourteen triple discharge stamps are employed the colts mine situated a short distance from the property of the commercial company is also on the producing list with a ten stamp mill in commission thirty five men are employed the output could not be ascertained the and kidd property recently purchased by J W messner from regan mccord is in this same district and is operating a five stamp mill with good results another promising property on burnt river is under development by J W thomson thompson who has a force of ten men at work the vein is ten feet wide and the ore so far as disclosed will average about 8 per ton in free gold perhaps the most sensational property in the burnt river district is the gold coin it is distinguished for the exceptional width of its ore body the vein is a conglomerate about sixty feet wide that is said to average 9 per ton in free gold A ten stamp mill was erected by the management but on the eve of starting the mill with the adjacent buildings was destroyed by fire the management is rebuilding and ten more stamps will be installed with the intention of adding ninety stamps additional colonel james panting owner and manager of the gold hill mine is making extensive improvements with a view to putting that property back on the list of producers this mine has a record of production but for the past year has been lying idle pending the settlement of some discord among the owners colonel panting recently acquired full ownership and work is now going forward with a promising outcome burnt river has long been noted for its placer gold and some of the earliest dig sings in eastern oregon were worked in this section only the rich ground in the channel however attracted the early mins miners ers recently J F batchelor bonded a number of ranches lying along burnt river among them the thompson swasey ranch the ellis ranch the shook ranch and the cissley ranch his purpose is to tb put dredgers on these farms as soon as spring opens all this property was thoroughly 1 prospected pecked Pec ted before the bonds were taken and there seems to be no doubt as to results it is regarded as one of the biggest dredging propositions in this section of 0 the state to the northeast of the burnt river district peter basche bas che is at work on the old conner creek mine which has a record of about in gold good results are reported from the work which is now going forward on this property on the powder river side of lookout mountain about twelve miles from the conner creek mine the most notable property is that of timber canyon work on this property for the past year has been under the direction of frank J davey consulting engineer about 1000 feet of work has been done underground and an ore chute feet long has been developed at a depth of feet the vein is four feet between walls and the ore will average 15 per ton in free gold the management is now preparing to install a mill of at least five stamps across powder river on the copper belt development is going rapidly forward at a number of different places on both sides of burkemont Bur kemont some remarkable developments have recently been made on this belt it is reliably stated that at the indiana mine a crosscut cross cut on the foot level has penetrated forty feet of ore which will average 50 per ton in copper gold and silver on the opposite side of burkemont Bur kemont james A howard and associates recently acquired control of a property on this belt which is equally remarkable underneath a gossan capping they have demonstrated a vein or deposit of copper feet wide which gives com commercial commeree merel al values clear across within six i feet of the surface it is one of the new sensations on the copper belt the north american property which occupies a central position on this belt in and around burkemont Bur kemont and which for the last year has been in process of development by D W C nelson manager is on the eve of changing hands A bond for has been executed by the company to new york capitalists on the terms of an option extending to january in the meantime nelson is having 1000 cords of wood delivered at the mine with a view to pushing development in the event the option is not exercised lucky al geiser has made another tur turn i n on the old bonanza mine about four years ago he sold this mine to F P hayes of philadelphia for cash hayes turned it to other parties at a reputed profit of about a year ago the management lost the ore and closed the mine with theider the idea that it had been worked out geiser took a lease from them on kavo favorable rable terms and within a few months had ered the ore bodies and so attractive has the proposition again become that the owners of the property have bought out the gelser geiser lease by paying him cash |
