Show FROM THE MINES TO CITY nearly all of the fine residences and business structures in salt lake city have been built with money derived from mining operations this in itself is sufficient proof of the statement that mining is profitable and that the industry is legitimate during the past few weeks salt lake has been stirred from center to circumference over announcements that have been made as to the proposed construction of skyscrapers throughout the business portions of the city in this movement samuel newhouse the mining magnate is especially conspicuous one of the big real estate transactions of late has been the purchase by y mr newhouse of the south half of the block bordered by main and S tate state streets and facing on fourth south this purchase entailed an outlay of and the buildings to be erected thereon and improvements made are to cost more one of the edifices in contemplation is to be twelve stories and fireproof on the doull drug store corner mr newhouse is to build another fine structure the money for this enterprise mr newhouse says comes from the boston consolidated and cactus mines and he adds that it is nothing more than right than that wealth so derived should go into the improvement and beautifying of utah towns and cities at the druehl franken corner at main and third south mrs mary judge who made a fortune out of the silver king and other park city mines will build a great eight story building 1 which will largely be occupied by railroad i companies at the smith drug store stor corner main and second south the walker brothers will soon erect a skyscraper the keith building on main street is to have an addition of several stories and will be otherwise improved mayor thompson will construct a fine building on main street the auerbach store building on main street is to be torn down and a splendid structure will adorn its present site while many other fine business blocks are in contemplation nearly all of the money for these splendid edifices and improvements comes from our mines and the fact that salt lake is so much indebted to the mining camps of the west is a magnificent tribute to the industry in addition to the enterprises already mentioned there has of late been a great beal d eal of activity in the residence portions of salt lake and quite a number of prominent raining mining men have purchased palatial homes 4 n popular localities and a number of such transfers are now in course of consummation salt lake is the mecca of the mining fraternity of this intermountain region and when one of its number makes a fortune in mining operations in the hills his first thought is to secure a fine home for himself and family in zion in the case of salt lake it is from the mines to the city |
