Show A WONDERFUL DRILLING MACHINE L the above cuts represent the J P karns tunnelling Tun nelling machine a recent invention of a colorado man and which is destined to revolutionize the tunnelling tun nelling and shafting shaf ting work of the mountain regions this present machine is 51 inches in diameter and takes takei out a complete tunnel of those dimensions at the rate of from three to four feet per hour the principal of the machine is simply power applied to a stone masons chisel and hammer the entire face of the wheel action is the same as a drill striking straight ahead against the breast of the tunnel the present machine weighs two tons and is given a stroke of eight inches and a speed of strokes per minute the driving device consists of two little giant rand machines set in tandem and using cubic feet of free air per minute this machine can be increased to any size up to sixteen or eighteen feet in diameter by simply increasing the power behind the wheel and n V I 1 4 A av N 3 consists of short stubby chisels which are in long sets with solid steel backs and fastened in the wheel with set screws the wheel rides in a steel ball bearing carriage consisting g of forty six large balls of an inch and a half in diameter and something like 2000 balls of a diameter of one eighth of an inch this allows the wheel to ride with perfect ease and all resistance and friction is overcome the edtion mo tion of this wheel is not rotary as a great many people imagine who have never seen it in operation but its the inventor is now preparing to have manufactured several wheels ranging from eight to sixteen feet in diameter J R belcher who owns the rights to the wheel for the state of utah is now stopping at the kenyon hotel in salt lake and intends installing a number of these machines in utah in the very near future he will no doubt visit a number of the mining camps while here and meet the mining men of utah who are interested in such work |
