Show MINERAL indications NEAR PROVO staff correspondence provo utah aug lo 10 it is a strange element in human nature by which man is continually looking for that which he deems good not in the present nor yet in his own home but in the softened outlines of the far faraway away in time and place for ages the devotees of religion have undertaken long and arduous pilgrimages that they might drink at the holy fountains and tread on sacred ground such a faith and such a passion took hold of the nations of europe at the time of the great crusades the sum of all good would come to those who aided in wrenching the holy land from the infidels but as these movements ended in disaster men were forced to think for themselves the scientific spirit finally gained some strength among these few they begun to study the meaning of the things near at hand and the possibilities of such study were ere long seen to be limitless the holy land of opportunity is about us if we will but open our eyes while we live in a scientific age the real pioneer work in the original search for truth is done by an exceedingly small number of men most of us are but tardy followers the deep seated trait in our natures of which I 1 am speaking and which has shown itself in the activities of the race for centuries still persists in us with almost undiminished force it is only that the few thinkers have forced us to change the direction of our hopes such reflections were impressed upon the writer as a result of a recent climb along the mountains from provo to springville Spring ville the popular reasoning runs in this vein provo is one of the oldest cities in the state if there are any indications of mineral wealth right at ones back door the necessary prospecting would have been done long before this you cant make us believe there is anything of value in these mountains and so with a few gopher holes these mountains are passed by but it would be well for us to listen to the thinkers and then not fail to do a little of the principal work ourselves jonathan buckley and brother are two of the men who have kept faith with these mountains for several years they are men without large capital but they have toiled and saved and put every dollar into their property about three miles northwest of provo continuous work has been done for the past two years and a half the mining review takes pleasure in the success of such dauntless men for it is such spirit that makes the strength of the state and in which we all put our main reliance for the future the garden city mining 1 company with seven claims of bf which the buckleys Buck leys are the chief owners has a capitalization of shares with a par value of ten cents each recently a small shipment of ore was made which r rah aa n 35 per cent lead and some silver with only a trace of gold since then a body of carbonate ore has been met with in the bottom of a cave which will run 70 per cent lead and from eight to sixteen ounces of silver the extent of this ore can not as yet be determined but the indications are that it is an immense formation that will probably run to a very great depth along the tilted strata the workings will soon lead into the ore body fifty feet below where it was encountered this fine ore six feet of which has been uncovered was met with in the upper workings where much labor and expense would be required to ship one hundred and fifty feet below the upper tunnel is another which is already in for a distance of feet when connections are completed with the upper workings the ore can be handled with only a fraction of the present labor and cost were such a property in a region where great mines were already developed ve loped the attention given it by the public would amount almost to a boom the ledge in which this ore is found can be traced along the mountains for miles the success of the buckless buckleys Buck leys has caused others to locate much of the area along the mountain the knights roberts company with property lying lower on the mountain and to the no north rth of the garden city mining company has tunneled in for a distance of feet and is making for the same ore body that has been met with above the copper bottom mining company organized about three months ago has property in slate canyon which has many substantial indications thomas evans is president miles davis manager and william burgess secretary they have three claims A tunnel is in for fifty feet A vein of 3 per cent copper ore has been met with which is four and one half feet wide C W cook has an option on property of the vira mining company where 25 per cent lead and 10 ounces in silver have been f found if one should wish to get a good idea of what the prospectors are doing in this region he should not fail to make a visit to the eleven claims of the tidal wave mining milling company about two miles north of springville Spring ville james pierce is president and manager of this company and is is on the ground making a close and intelligent study of the strata and his faith that the mountain will bring forth great values in copper and gold increases every day he also belongs to the class of men who determine the future in this section the cap rock is quartzite the mineral rock is the quartz veins veins occur in the gneiss and schistose shi stose rocks bearing silver and telluride gold assays essays of this quartz have run from 90 cents to in gold sixteen years ago a boulder coming from the ledge on the tidal wave claim was sent to new york A small per cent of gold and silver was reported it is thought some other rare mineral was present for an offer of 30 was made on the condition that a six inch vein of it could be found so runs the story A two foot vein with the same sort of rock has been found running through the gneiss and chist for a distance of feet no careful analysis of this quartz has since been made running parallel with the quartz veins and in contact with them is a belt sixteen feet wide bearing copper carbonate much of this runs 18 per cent A big tunnel is run in for a distance of feet in going into the tunnel one passes through the cambrian rock for a distance of feet at this point we find the rock well charged with iron pyrites specked with green copper carbonate heavy talc veins occur there is a twenty foot vein of purple and fluorine talc which contains aluminium and kidneys of copper carbonate in feet the rock is encountered where a ten foot vein of mica chist is found parallel with cleavage lines and interlaced with quartz inlets ve A few feet further in a one foot vertical vein of quartz crystals is seen cutting through the gneiss granite black manganese is shot through the quartz invariably some telluride gold is found in conjunction with the manganese assay of this ore of what was thought to be an average specimen ran in gold and 16 ounces in silver in about feet we came to a forty foot vein of a vertical dip of mica chist and talc traversed by quartz inlets ve after passing through a serpentine area we come to a quartz vein bearing a large quantity of mineral resembling antimony there is nearly one hundred feet yet to be traversed before the slate contact is reached where the surface indications point to gold and copper in paying quantities mr pierce places great confidence in the slate belt with quartzite walls shot through with gray and green copper as a great indication for gold and with good reason the great gold area in alaska california australia and cripple creek are in just such formations that of the last named tallying with itin it in nearly every detail the mineral contacts on these claims are numerous higher g up at the lime is f found the same lead vein that has been opened up at provo work is going on rapidly higher up on the tidal wave group that will open up the copper ores that abundant proof may be had of values sufficiently large that capital cap may be secured for development the surface indications are surely wonderful the white rose mining company has six claims lying to the south of the tidal wave james whitehead of springville Spring ville is president the company is greatly encouraged cou raged by recent discoveries these mountains lie in the mineral and there are many indications that zon greal depth will not be needed for development great the formation should be studied more fully and more prospecting should be done don care what ideal e mining camps w would utah have in the beautiful towns along the eastern edge of utah valley |
