Show WILLOW CREEK DISTRICT special correspondence rebel creek nevada march 22 willow creek mining district is situated on the western slope of bf cottonwood range of mountains humboldt county nevada about six ty five miles north from winnemucca on the line of the southern pacific railroad the district is forty one miles long and approximately six miles wide the vein system runs north and south parallel with the axis of the range the formation is cambrian shale tilted at right angles to the original plane of deposition the apex of the range is composed of intrusive mos covite granite probably belonging to the tertiary era A secondary eruption of miocene is in A evidence vi which produced the morphological agencies of ferruginous quartz showing a ribbon or banded structure indicating deposition by hydrothermal action the veins are contact fissures lying between cambrian slate and igneous diorite the principal metals are gold silver and lead the latter being found in connection with occasional lime dykes the proportion in values of the precious metals are about one part gold to two of silver occasionally the values are nearly equal the oxidized zone varies with the topography of the range the deeply eroded canyons on the eastern and western slopes give ideal conditions for mining by the adit tunnel system the cottonwood range is the best watered mining region in nevada and some fine mining timber can be obtained along the course of the numerous streams that have their rise at i lle L le ie apex of the range which has three prominent peaks varying in altitude from to feet the geological and conditions in the district closely resemble the great mother lode found on the eastern slope of the sierra nevada range of mountains in california the general altitude of the vein system is between and feet the history of the district dates back over twenty years at that period a few mines were operated and several shipments of ore treated at the salt lake reduction plants but excessive freight railroad trans probation pro tation and treatment charges caused a suspension of the industry the main reason however was lack of capital necessary to erect suitable plants for the treatment of the free milling ores contained in the oxidized zone the present season promises to be one of unusual mining activity owing to the fact that idaho capitalists capitalist s entered the region last fall and organized the north star mining and milling company under the laws of nevada with a capitalization of and an equal number of shares of the par value of each the following is the personnel of the corporation J W ferguson president dave somerville vice president and W R helm secretary ecret ary the company owns six mining claims on flat creek about eight miles north of mccolley station with over twelve hundred feet of development the vein is from three to seven feet wide and runs the entire distance through four claims the ore is free milling and assays essays from 8 to as ab high as in gold bold and silver values the rich ore chute discovered last fall carries over six ounces in gold and ounces in silver there are are several thousand tons of positive ore in sight valued at over A mill will be erected this coming summer JAMES GODWIN |
