Show geological WORK IN ARIZONA A party that included T M bannon C H birdseye seye and nd S S stahl was engaged in topographic work in arizona on the desert well fort mcdowell camels back and part of the sacaton quadrangles for publication on the scale of with a contour interval of 50 feet mr R H sargent worked on a map of the tombstone special quadrangle which will be published on the scale of 1 with a conious interval of 50 feet in order to bring the leveling of the geological survey to a higher standard of accuracy it was decided in the fall of 1904 to adopt the coast and geodetic survey methods and instruments for the most important lines of levels with this purpose in view a precise level outfit was purchased including two velocipede cars for use along the southern pacific railroad and mr al S bright ran the first line from yuma to tucson in all the geological survey mapped square miles in arizona ran miles of spirit levels and 1601 miles of traverse lines and established 91 bench marks topographic surveys of forest reserves in this state were also made including work on the shizumo quadrangle to secure additional dit ional control for this quadrangle and adjacent areas a line of levels was run from apex siding to williams along the grand canyon ra railroad broad and by way of ash fork to jerome junction along the saute sante fe railroad between williams and jerome junction the precise level was used early in january 1905 mr john P walker united states surveyor began to burfey sarv ey the boundary of the chiricahua reserve he continued the work until the early part of may when the entire line consisting of 92 miles was completed and marked with iron posts in connection with the establishment of the boundary 2 miles of public land lines were run secondary triangulation was extended over three 15 minute quadrangles in maricopa maricola Mari copa county by mr T M bannon six secondary and three point stations were located by intersections owing to the exceptionally bad weather topographic work in arizona was much delayed last winter no geologic field work was done in arizona during the last fiscal year but mr waldemar lindgren spent considerable time completing the clifton folio the measurement of streams in this territory was confined to localities investigated for irrigation purposes mr W A parish farish was in charge of hydrographic investigations with headquarters at phoenix ariz stations were maintained at yuma gila city san carlos mcdowell roosevelt alma and charlestown Charles town the principal investigations in this territory were conducted by mr willis T lee in the valley of colorado river from the mouth of the grand canyon to yuma most of the valleys and mountain ranges in this area were examined and a report was prepared and alid submitted for publication progress was also made with the preparation of the report on the underground waters of the high plateau area of the northern cen aral and northeastern portions of the territory A paper on the underground waters of gila valley by mr lee was published and one on the underground waters of the salt river valley was sent to the printer within the year hydro economic work in arizona was in the hands of mr sheldon K baker who made an investigation of the quality of the ground waters in the salt river valley and their probable behavior after the new irrigation system now being installed Is put in operation he also carried on detailed studies in the upper part of the salt river basin to determine the source of sodium chloride in the water of this stream and the probability of its economical elimination attention was given under the reclamation law to the consideration of the relative merits of the two large reservoir sites in this territory which had been previously known and widely discussed these are the san carols site on gila river and the silt salt river site on salt river the principal tributary of the gila the san carlos site was examined in connection with the surveys of the buttes butte s reservoir site in addition gen eral examination was made of opportunities of storing water in various parts of the territory and of the underground waters of salt river valley that may be made available by pumping the reclamation world work in arizona is under the charge of mr louis C hill supervising engineer the salt river project involves the construction st of a dam feet high for the storage of acre feet of water and of power plants for pumping water for irrigation in the lower valley during the year a water works system was installed for the purpose of supplying potable water to the camp and town at roosevelt the telephone line connecting the head works of the upper power canal with the arizona dam was completed the building for the cement mill was finished the machinery installed and the mill put in operation about a year ago the phoenix roosevelt road was finished the power canal at the mouth of the verde located and the cadastral survey of the irrigable lands in phoenix valley completed the contract for the dam was let to J M co of galveston tex complete tests of the irrigation plants in salt river valley were carried on thesa include tests of steam steam electric hydro electric and gasoline plants ranging in capacity from 10 to horsepower the data obtained together with the work on the underground flow which is already som plated will furnish the basis for the design of the pumping plants which will form part of the project the reservoir site for the san carlos project is on the white mountain indian reservation in arizona below the mouth of san carlos creek on gila river observations of river flow and sediment have been taken during the past year and reconnaissance surveys have been made of possible reservoir sits on the upper gila A detailed topographic maphas map has been made of the dam site and anda a contour map partly made of the |
