Show completion OF THE NEW PEARL SMELTER during the past six or eight months work has been vigorously pushed in the building of the new smelting smelling sm elting plant at pearl colorado and the extensive and successful development of the numerous mines of that locality during the past year has emphasized the belief expressed by experienced mining men that it will not be long now before the mining camp of pearl one of the most promising to be found in western colorado would soon tarke take rank as one of the richest pearl smelter and for the first time we are enabled to publish a view of the smelter S in I 1 n its complete state everything there is now in order and the plant ready to receive ore preparatory to blowing in as soon as the weather permits in the spring it is the intention of the management to pay the best possible prices for ore and to do everything in their power to encourage mining in our district the officers of the national mining and company is now fully ready to do business business we give the following description of the pearl smelting smelling sm elting works the main smelter building is feet engine and boiler room feet and additional dit ional ore bins feet the office building is feet ani and blacksmith and tool shop these buildings are put up in excellent shape and the main buildings are roofed with corrugated iron the charge room floor is constructed of 4 iola the naw smelter at P arl colo ado just completed producers of metallic wealth to be found in our sister state in a recent issue the mining times of ape pearl arl gave a detailed description of the now new smelling smelting sm sill elting plant at that place which we take pleasure in reproducing in these columns believing that the same will be of interest t to mining review readers the mining news says the completion of the water tank last saturday puts the finishing touch to the milling company which controls the pearl smelting smelling Sm elting company are president 0 S richardson of chicago vice president pres ment F ford ord H rogers of detroit treasurer J C page of chicago secretary H I 1 S richardson of chicago resident manager ty larold harold wilson of pearl the fir first i st three gentlemen together with august lenke and 0 W hinckley both of chicago constitute the board of directors in order to emphasize the fact that the tural steel and everything is up ui the most convenient and substantial manner possible the machinery consists of a blast furnace the capacity of which iss is tons ton s per month and was built by the colorado iron works a no 7 connersville Conners ville blower two go 80 horsepower boilers horsepower corliss engine a and nd rolls crushers and all the tools cars etc necessary in the operation ti on of a smelter the dust chamber is constructed of brick and is feet in length feet in the clear the stack is 60 feet high the elevation on which it is erected making the top about 75 feet above the furnace room the smelter is erected on rising ground about one mile south of pearl and on the south bank of the south fork of big creek the company has about cords of woo wood I 1 cut and piled at the smelter with more in the timber ready to be hauled to the works when this smelter is in operation it will be one of the most complete plants of its ift kind in the country the machinery is all of the best and most approved type and with an abundance of ore to keep it in operation the pearl smelter will be a success from tile the time the first wheel is turned the construction of the pearl smelter means to this section the difference between profit and loss in the operation of the properties ore in abundance is here but the distance to the railroad or to the reduction works at encampment is prohibitory to the shipment of the product especially the lower grades as the cost of transportation will invariably eat up the profits generally leaving a loss this has been one of the greatest drawbacks to the pearl district and now that it is removed the development of the properties here will be pushed as rapidly as possible money has been interested in the various propositions and while some delay has beben experienced most of the owners holding back on their development work until the smelter should be constructed the camp will be opened up this summer in a manner that will leave no doubt as to its being one of the greatest copper districts in the west through the medium of a personal letter from pearl the mining review is informed that the swede and wolverine mines of the pearl district began the shipment of their ores to the pearl smelter jan ath and and that the smelter is in line for a long and continuous run accompanying this article we give an excellent halftone half tone illustration of the new plant which it will readily be seen is modern in its construction and up to date in every respect its operation will be watched with interest by mining men throughout this intermountain region |
