Show IN THE TE REGION REG ION written for the mining review revie by earl dunshee if in the early sixties uncle dave service discovered in the tempiute Tempi ute range in lincoln county nevada a rich vein of silver ore while probably but few of the present day mining men ever heard the name before tempiute Tempi ute in its day and age was but little less known than was pioche or austin two famous and well known nevada mining camps its ores were rich the veins were large and strong the ores went down and maintained their values with depth and it was no wonder that the owners of the mines of the district were figuring on big dividends and that people were prophesying another comstock tor for nevada but this was not to be at least not then early in the history of the district the tempiute Tempi ute mine passed into the hands of u a mining engineer by the name of mcmurray and two associates whose names time and the common gossip have failed to record under ays able mana ement the mine had developed into a shipping and paying property in spite of the fact that the ore from the mine had to be hauled to eureka nevada for shipment the hauling being done by ox teams at an charge at this time a quaker company had bought some mining property in the vicinity of the Tem template tempiute Tempi plute ute sending out a railroad conductor and other mining men to develop it at this stage two incidents happened that prevented the realization of the expectations of the company and of those interested in the development of this wonderfully mineralized section one of the bad men of the country seeing a chance to clean up a few thousand jumped the spring from which the quakers obtained their water supply and to protect his right camped there with his shotgun shot gun the water hauler reported the proceeding to his superintendent who being a good quaker stated that they did not need the money bad enough to have any trouble over the matter so work at the mine was discontinued and the superintendent and his companions departed to the more peaceful camp of philadelphia and they are still waiting evidently until the camp had a better class of citizens before resuming operations about the same time mcmurray attempted to drive a miner from tempiute Tempi ute holdings under the apprehension that the miner was a trespasser upon the property of the corn com pany and received a shot in one of his lungs for his trouble mcmurray lived long enough to request that he be buried on the east cast side of tempiute Tempi ute peak the coroners jury brought in a verdict of suicide and the old timers still relate how at the funeral it took eight strong men to carry the body encased in a rough pine box to the top cf the mountain and point out the pile of stones that mark his last resting place macmur rays partners continued to W work ork the property until one night their cabin burned and they perished in the flames this was the last straw the properties of both companies had been patented and so could not be jumped with the big mines of the camp closed down it did not take long for the little fellows to get stampeded to other camps and so Tem template tempiute Tempi plute ute was deserted the houses there still stand in almost as good condition as the day they were deserted as the desert air preserves the wood and man or beast seldom pass that way the present mining revival in nevada has brought to the front many of the old and once abandoned camps of the state camps whose very names have been forgotten excepting by those who lived in those days days when nevada was the silver state and when silver was king the present rush has extended from tonopah te tc goldfield from goldfield to bullfrog and tho the crowd is pushing on to kawich goldfreed Gold reed tempiute Tempi ute and irish mountain Tem template tempiute Tempi plute ute also called Timpa hute is about eighty five miles west of caliente by the way of hiko and irish mountain or miles by way of gardners gardeners Gard ners and springs which latter road is preferred by the freighters because of its easy grades and good road fine water is obtainable at which is eight miles from the mines plenty of timber for fuel and mine use is to be had in the camp cedar and some pine covering the mountain valley thirty five miles from tempiute Tempi ute supplies horse feed and farm products thus saving the longer haul from the railroad the Tem template tempiute Tempi plute ute mineral belt is about five miles in length and about a mile wide A large quartzite ledge bounds the zone or on the west while the general formation is a blue and grey lime the veins running in a northerly and southerly direction the ore is a very hard white quartz which has not been leached beached by the action of the elements and it retains its values to the grassroots grass roots the veins which occur in the lime are from a few inches to ten t e n or twelve feet in width and can be traced for thousands of feet ou oa the surface the main values are in silver with lead copper and gold values present in small quantities thousand ounce silver is not an unusual occurrence while small picked samples have been tested going as high as ounces in the white metal to the ton being practically a pure silver glance the deepest workings in the camp are on the Tem template tempiute Tempi Plute ute property where a shaft is down feet both the value of the ore and the width of the vein at this depth continue equally good it if not better than on the surface showing conclusively that this ignot merely a surface camp thousands of tons of ore are now exposed in the raine mine already mentioned as well as I 1 in ther other pro artles in that locality which ano with ith proper methods and r processes c could 0 uld I 1 made to yield a handsome profit and wit improved transportation facilities there is n Z doubt but that the old tempiute Tempi ute distri aou would id fulfill the promise of forty years
