Show 0 GOOSE NESTED OUT 79 in many of the mining camps of the west may be found innumerable shallow shafts of regular size at the top but running to point at the bottom in mining parlance such holes in the ground are termed goose nests and it may well be said that those sinking them have been goose nested out and for the reason that in prospect development the miner could go no further because of lack of room to work in in the beginning of the sinking of such a shaft the prospector or miner as the caso case may be starts out full of hope and confidence fi at the collar the shaft is of regulation size A little ways down a boulder comes in and its removal would involve con sid erable labor so it is allowed to remain A few feet further on another boulder is encountered and this also is left unmolested the result being that the size of the shaft by this time is materially diminished other boulders butt into the game from time to time until the shaft digger finds that he has hardly standing room let alone any room for continued sinking and he must either remove the boulders and straighten out his shaft or discontinue further operation at this point As a matter of fact he 1 id 14 4 goose nested out and all his labor has been for naught in the pursuit of the mining industry more goose nesting is to be found than is merely associated with shaft sinking and boulders of various kinds are encountered it takes a man of grit and determination to manage a mining proposition successfully some mine managers are full of enthusiasm in the start and until difficulties are met all is fair sailing with them but these generally fail to meet the difficulties that are bound to occur in any mining ent enterprise er prise they are evaded and ignored instead of be ing removed at the proper time but still they are ever in painful evidence and tho the manager continues along these lines until he is virtually goose nested out the mine is closed down and the property involved Js is declared to be no good and valueless I 1 poor judgment shiftlessness carelessness careless nebb a and nd laziness all combined are involved in the makeup of the goose nester such a man is not a miner but a failure he is incompetent competent nt to take care of his own interests or to ma manage nage the affairs of a mining com 1 pany or of individuals he is a detriment to the cam camp p in which he may operate and is responsible for the black eye that has unmerited been given to the mining industry in many localities in the west |
