Show THE DIXIE MEADOWS american sumpter ore things have again assumed a very lively air at the dixie meadows mine preparatory to installing the new reduction plant the future of this mine is certainly as bright as any in the district with development work aggregating more than feet and ore reserves established to run the new 15 stamp mill for at least a year ana and a hald bald there are no obstacles in sight to prevent its continuous operation so much has been said of this valuable property through the press that it seems scarcely cesary decesary ne to repeat the history ot location and development but tor for the benefit of many who have become recently interested it will be given briefly located in 1900 by joe reese it was incorporated in 1902 into the dixie meadows gold mining company composed almost entirely of prominent men in the john day valley the development of the mine has been wholly under the supervision of mr reese ever since its location the principal development work has been done on the ruby claim and consists of numerous open cuts and a dritt drift ot of feet on the vein to prove the permanency of the immense ore body work was then started on a crosscut tunnel farther down them the mountain to further prove the value ot of the vein this was driven a distance ot of feet where the vein was cut and drifts started which have been extended teet feet and much ore extracted from the drift and slopes here it was found that the vein held an average width of thirty feet and the property proven beyond a doubt to have the making of a big mine consequently another crosscut was started as far down the mountain as possible in order to gain depth and also for a working tunnel as at the portal of the tunnel the mill was installed A drive of feet was necessary before the vein was encountered after establishing a station drifts were run a distance of feet the face of the drift being very nearly feet from the surface A raise was made from this level to tunnel 2 a distance of feet and an intermediate drift was wa run feet the vein thirty feet wide has two ore shoots of very high grade shipping ore on either wall the one on the hanging wall being one foot in width and on the foot wall four feet while between these rich ore bodies is from twenty to twenty five feet ot of low grade milling ore running from 3 9 to 10 per ton the vein has been deev loped on the west end by a sixty foot shaft and a thirty foot drift on the gladys claim while on the cayuse a crosscut of feet was driven to cut the vein at about feet depth and a drift of feet was run in both shaft and dritt drift good ore was found and the vein also showed to increase in width with depth the development at both ends proves the continuity of the vein through the entire group or a distance of feet the mill was originally with a roller process but the treatment proved unsatisfactory as much of the values were lost in the tailings the rollers are now being replaced by a new fifteen stamp mill with five standard concentrating tables the whole to be driven by horsepower steam plant notwithstanding all that has been said of this mine it is almost impossible to get a correct idea of the enormity of the ore body without seeing it some exceedingly high grade ore has been taken out one lot of about pounds was taken from the side running high as per ton arrangements for the winter are being perfected and it is expected to have everything running smoothly before cold weather begins |
