Show WILL BUILD AN ELECTRIC RAILROAD call lead south dakota I 1 henry J mayham and william sauntry are spending a fortnight in the black hills looking after the hidden fortune colu columbus m I 1 hs and other mining enterprises hereabouts a ats mayham and sauntry are plan ning on the construction of some chiri miles of electric railroad to tap the wyoming coal fields and have also organized a company for the construction of a power plant out near cold springs wyoming to furnish electric power for their numerous mining enterprises and also for sale to other mining companies of the black hills in south dakota and wyoming it is understood that a contract was closed in chicago on february 27 for the construction or of a horse power plant at a cost of to be completed within ane year from that date the company is known as the economic power company and is composed of some of the wealthiest men of the eastern states and has acquired acquire a some 2000 acres of coal lands eight miles east of sundance and a diamond drill and other machinery was recently sent out from deadwood and is now being put in position for operation to prospect the coal deposits to a depth of 1000 feet there are large beds of coal boal outcropping out cropping the surface all over the ground which has been pronounced by experts to be of a superior quality the probabilities are that with deep workings extensive flows of oil will be encountered and there is good chance of some large oil wells being put down the opening of these coal and fields and providing them with transportation will mean much to the people of the hills and that portion of wyoming it will mean cheaper and better quality of fuel besides making an outlet for the farm products of that now isolated reg region on at the present presen t time oats are sel selling ling in sundance for one third less than they sell for in the hills and potatoes about the same the reason for this is that everything has to be freighted a distance of fifty miles by team over poor roads to find a market the farmers of that region do not tax the producing capacity of their agricultural lands owing to not having access to ready market the total length of the power line will be thirty five miles which has already been surveyed and stakes set for the poles 1 the proposed railroad will commence at a point about eight miles southeast of sul dance and run in an easterly direction to the junction of grand canyon and cold springs creek thence up grand canyon on to the mouth of rifle pit gulch and on to the old sawmill site of cf stearns steams co on the divide from whence a branch will bo be run to welcome and tinton binton the main line will wiil COT cor dinue from the divide down little spearfish crossing big spearfish creek thence P through johnson gulch to ragged top thence to portland over the divide into lead and deadwood this is practically an a OT air line and an ail easy grade it is estimated that the construction of the line of thirty five miles will cost about per mile this route passes through miles and miles of the finest sa saw sav v mining and tie timber to be found in the northwest and will find ready market at good prices as soon as transportation il 1 on is afforded the timber lands have mostly been taken up and lead and deadwood people have not net been slow in getting in on the ground floor before the grand rush takes place among those from lead who possess deeds to valuable tracts of heavy timber are james cusick joseph pullen B F atkins henry harwood and wife george dark clark dr bowman mike and john katon and a number of others of deadwood also own good timber lands along the line as do a number I 1 of terry people |
