Show NEW CAMPS IN RANGE miner tonopah To nev malcolm L macdonald general manager of the southwestern nevada mines company who returned wednesday evening from a two weeks visit to the scene of the recent gold discoveries in the kawich range makes a report on the new district which indicates that this is likely to prove the greatest strike ever made in the country not even excepting goldfield and bullfrog mr macdonald and his party brought in some samples from the outcroppings outcrop pings of the main ledge which show more free gold thany any rock ever exhibited in camp A large chunk of the ore which was placed on exhibition yesterday in the window of the nye county bank is literally alive with gold the ledge from which the samples were taken stands 8 or 10 feet above the surface and the outcropping cropping out is 25 feet in width and 50 feet in length disappearing at each end beneath the wash produced by erosion A number of samples were assayed yesterday and gave values ranging from to a ton indicating that the entire ledge at the surface is a first class shipping proposition the original discovery was made early last summer by 0 K reed and J A may who were prospecting on a grubstake furnished by thos J lynch chas E morris A wardle and malcolm L macdonald and the claims where the rich ledge is situated were acquired by reed and may in september by relocation the new camp is at the south end of the kawich range just north of quartzite mountain about fifty five miles due east of goldfield and about thirty five miles due south of reveille A district known as the goldfreed Gold reed mining district has been formed with A requa as recorder the district extends ten miles north and south and six miles east and west at the time mr macdonald and his party left for tonopah the country surrounding the great discovery had been staked for four miles north and south and three miles east and west about five hundred locations having been made macdonald and his have acquired forty seven claims in all and it is their intention to organize a company to handle their large holdings it is probable that the leasing system will be adopted to encourage the rapid development of the country A townsite has been laid out and some two hundred lots staked out not with a view of deriving any revenue from the sale of town property but in order to avoid confusion in the selection of building sites the great drawback to the new camp is the scarcity of wood and water the nearest water in the camp from this direction is at antelope springs twenty five miles from goldfreed Gold reed cliff springs fifteen miles east of camp is the nearest source of supply two wells are being sunk about four miles from goldfreed Gold reed and it is expected that water will be struck in these wells sometime some time next week prospectors are warned that they must carry hay and grain for their horses from goldfield and take on a supply of water at antelope springs sufficient chent to make the round trip the new discoveries have created intense excitement both here and at goldfield and a large number of men have already left fo for r goldfreed Gold reed while many others are outfitting outwitting out fitting with the intention of trying their fortunes in the new district |
