thoroughly attested by the stamp of men who 0 o have invested their good money this dast Pt puyear year in chelist the list we find such names as colonel frank ray and wm H brevoort of new ew york p H company of chicago and condor water power company of new york and the takilma smelting smelling Sm elting company of colorado have expended from to each in the development and nd equipment of their great properties the one for purely quartz development the second for power to facilitate development and the third for copper smelting smelling sm elting 17 many gany other companies have spent from 10 to each in development As much of this expenditure is yet to be realized upon the coming year may confidently be anticipated as one of even greater things especially in productive lines than that just closed there are now about thirty mines in southern oregon equipped with mills some of these have just been completed and will not be in commission for a few weeks or months yet and still others will have mills built and ready for work some of them have been bee n producing for several years but the great majority are of recent development greenback grave creek 40 stamps ton cyanide granite others 1 ers but is ig a simple statement of the power and enterprise of the american gold fields company and the infallible w worth orth of its gigantic proposition manager morphy of this company in the herculean Hercule task of shaping the granite hill has proceeded as calmly and confidently as a master sculptor fashioning a masterpiece from the crude stone lie he has the touch of a master hand he knows his material will remain firm and true and he has every detail of the work in mind confidence is an absolute essential to successful mining A weak hearted faltering man is as much out of place in the mining business as a poland china pig in a latin class manager morphy has entire confidence in the granite hill gained by a preliminary scientific investigation by which he read the mines virtues as plainly as the handwriting hand writing on the walland wall and this confidence has been strengthened by subsequent development unfold ments and discoveries backed by the staunch support of his loyal company thus it came about that were spent in development and equipment of the granite hill this past year and the company has much to show for this expenditure when you get off the stage at granite hill the end of an eight mile drive from grants pass you find yourself in a busy mining camp you are in the heart of the louse creek district with its dense forests of pine and mountains of hidden treasure and here is the great demesne of the american gold fields company its vast acreage of mineral and timber land of which the great forests of fir and pine in themselves would make several men millionaires the several mine buildings and quarters as well as a number of dwellings for the married men of the crew spread town like over a c considerable area and were all built from lumber cut by the granite hill sawmill from granite hill timber the central figure of the camp is the big millhouse in this are housed the battery ten stamps 0 of f which are thundering continually and more will be b e added in the near future ture the auxillia ry machinery consists of an 80 ton crusher four fru banners van ners a horsepower atlas engine and a smaller engine for operating the dynamo by which the entire camp and the interior of the mine is electric lighted there is also a six drill compressor two boilers and a horsepower turbine is now being placed to support the boiler battery on the hillside just above the mill mili and near the shaft collur collar is the commodious hoisting room and ponderous machinery macLi nery the hoist is of the double drum twin engine type with one inch steel cable operated over a 40 foot and capable of developing the mine to a depth of ha 00 feet development from all levels proceeds proceed s from the double compartment vertical shaft and down this you are dropped on the cage to see the underground workings five T t gers gerroll ll sergeant drills are kept at work by b the three shifts in the drifts and 7 A As 8 you descend the cage darts past well wel llight heavily timbered and roomy stations not the least interesting of which is the otle one c cut t especially forthe for the big pump on the foot level in this station cut in thi the s solid olid 1 1 rock rock a no 9 cameron pump with a capacity of gallons daily sucks lideks tle the inflow from froin the sump and keeps the levels free of water of course nothing like this amount of water comes in but like all other features of the granite hills equipment this is placed to meet all future requirements on every level you will find the ledge presenting the same wide breast unchanged except for greater stableness with depth if there is any one point that the granite hill management is upon it is that of the ore values it is optimistic to a broad degree but bu it will not indulge ir in fancy superlatives relative to quartz values but the consulting engineer who is one of the most conservative mining men in the west john ross jr of sutter creek cal pronounces the granite hill ledge one of these never endings ending propositions one that does not depend solely the glittering product of the stringers and ore shoots but upon the bigness and wideness and firmness of the ledge its six seven and even ten and twenty feet of ledge matter is all ore very little of which is not milling already 0 on n one level this ledge is opened for feet every foot of which is one continuous pay shoot and still the drills are puncturing it deeper and deeper east and west undoubtedly this will prove one of the most remarkable ore bodies in the great mineral northwest thus far there are none in oregon superior to it tunnel and drift work is now so well in hand on the several levels that development becomes but a matter of unfolding the ore body As the shaft I 1 is driven down drifts are run each way on the ledge and th thus 8 the process goes on with an ever increasing ore supply being blocked in r reserve this is the policy of the american gold fields management at present and has been s since it took hold of the granite hill to unfold rather than use up to block an ore supply first and install the stamps later thebie the big millhouse and auxiliary equipment would easily operate forty stamps should the company put them in tomorrow and they could be supplied from the levels now uncovered but manager morphy prefers first to get g down deep down with millions in sight then put in the stamps by the tens and ana twenties and forties and the ore supply will not come alone abou from the granite hill for there is the red from the granite gra jacket a short distance devel 0 hill claim that is being separately I 1 I 1 coln pany gold fields combar aped by the american and which bids fair to rival its big si sister to a good s T the he property is already developed continued on page 2 28 8 GRANITE HILL MINES continued from front page 18 depth by seve several ral hundred feet of tunnels and drifts an inclined shaft as large as the vertical shaft of the granite hill and also double compartment and heavily timbered penetrates this mine and from it development work proceeds the steel skip is operated over a high the cable being drawn by an equipment of hoist boiler and engine placed for the red jacket alone the ore from this mine which carries a higher percentage of free gold is treated in the granite hill mill there are three distinct veins in the red jacket but all will no doubt merge into one big ledge on the deeper levels there is still untold the marvelous riches of the vast acreage of placer ground with its hydraulic equipment on the granite hill properties and the ida golden terry jumbo coronation bedrock and other quartz claims all of which will in time add to the ore supply of the property the granite hill is truly the oregon homestake Home stake and will do for oregon what another world famed mine has done for dakota it is destined to a permanent place in the future annals of southern oregon and to f a prominent place on the list of great mines of the northwest there are seventy men on the pay roll of the granite hill mines and all aie are as busy as bees and there is not a drone in the lot the company has never let a pay day pass without dealing out in cold cash every cent due for labor and supplies hence there has never been a strike or disagreement of any kind in this camp superintendent wickersham is careful in selecting first class miners and requires each to perform a day days S work for a days wage the citizens of grants pass are proud of the success of the granite hill mines and when the lewis dark clark fair opens at portland in june it is expected that thousands of eastern visitors will take advantage of stopover stop over privileges at grants pass and oue oile of the biggest sights to be shown them will be the big granite hill mines in full operation |
