Show THE consolidated JEFFERSON MINES in recent issues the mining review has made quite extended mention of big and little cottonwood cotton wood mining districts in the wasatch range ir in salt lake county only a bev miles distant from salt lake city in these articles it was shown that these districts were productive of large quantities of high grade ore in the early history of mining in this state and that this production this locality will become noted for its producing and paying mines it is but a few years ago now that great excitement prevailed in this city and elsewhere over some exceedingly rich gold discoveries co veries that were made in the new state mine in the section mentioned above the ore was a white quartz that was thickly studded with gold news of the discovery when it was found that the exceedingly rich ore existed on the surface in narrow zones in the big ledges and that depth would have to be attained before the bodies of mineral would make in shipping and commercial quantities interest in the new field gradually died out in the ranks of the enthusiastic leaving as the mainstays main stays of the camp a few of the old dimeis who were there before the ni if 4 t JEFFERSON BOARDING house consolidated JEFFERSON SHAFT house AND dump consolidated was largely confirmed con fired to the camps located near ar the heads of big and little cottonwood canyons which are but a few miles apart NO particular mention was made however hOl vever of the section of richly mineralized P country in the foothills situated between the mouths of these two streams in which locally ity there is considerable mining activity no ti bable Ceable at the present time the indications being ng that it will not be long now before was quickly circulated abroad and it was not long thereafter before the foothills between the two streams were dotted with a small army of pro prospectors and miners many new locations were made the town of gold city was located in the valley below a short half mile from the discovery in the new state and for awhile all was intense activity considerable development work being performed for the time being but 15 boom began and who have since held on with a tenacity born of a firm conviction that with depth and more extensive exploitation mines would be developed in this locality which would be the equal if not the peer of any of the great wealth producers and dividend payers for which utah is so justly famous the world over among these old timers a veteran in mining affairs was nicholas who was mining in this section when the new state was discovered and who since the boom has steadily acquired acau ired a large area of territory including the new state the whole later on forming the basis for the incorporation of the consolidated jefferson gold and copper mining company the property of the company is located in big cottonwood district five miles east of sandy on the san pedro and the rio grande western railroads the acreage including over forty eight claims and embracing the josephene the twin peaks the jefferson the new state and the belcher groups all of which are contiguous and adjoining the formation the main ledges of the consolidated jefferson with but little exception are contact veins between and diorite and brych ite the being altered granite and the hanging wall diorite especially is of the consolidated jefferson has been done on the jefferson and new state groups that on the jefferson aggregating 1000 feet and on the new state feet A great deal of this work has been concentrated at a point near the sideline of these two properties and is being carried on from the shaft house of the company a halftone half tone illustration of which accompanies this article seventy feet east of the main working shaft is the lower new state tunnel this has been run into the mountain a distance of feet almost at its portal a north and south ledge was encountered which carried with it an ore streak about twenty inches in width on this a was sunk to a depth of ninety feet the vein at this depth being three feet in width and assaying from 2 to 20 in gold to the ton after leaving this ledge the tunnel was continued for a distance of feet before tapping one t ferent erent fissures have been encountered which show a continuity of the ore bodies from the main tunnel level to this depth A fifty foot has been sunk on the middle fissure the bottom of which shows a twenty inch streak of ore that is fairly sprinkled with native gold in the continued development of this portion of the com banys property it is the intention to sink another feet in the shaft from which level drifts will be ruh run to get to the ore deposits at a still greater depth indeed this work is now under way and when the desired connections are made it is the expectation pec tation that the ore measures will make in greater if not in richer bodies at the josephene the main crosscut cross cut tunnel which is now in about feet is being driven to tap the big ledge that outcrops so boldly on the surface to make this connection about feet more work is necessary in the driving of this tunnel an im 4 N 4 it 0 N 77 il 4 fa THE tar JOSEPHENE DISCOVERY tue THE JOSEPHENE TUNNEL this the case in the jefferson and new state groups which adjoin adi oin each other these main ledges have a northeasterly and southwesterly strike with a dip of about forty two degrees to the west there are four of these big ledges on the jefferson and new state groups and three on the josephene and twin peaks groups all ot of which assay well on the surface crossing these main ledges at intervals there are a series of east and west fissures four of which are on the jefferson and new state ground the supposition being that big bodies of rich and high grade ore will be found at the function of these contact and fissure veins with depth the josephene group presents a somewhat different formation quartzite and porphyry accompany accompanying ing the main ledges and these also are cut by bv cross fissures silver values predominating in these veins mine development the greater portion of the large amount of work that has been performed in the de of the east and west fissures mentioned above the rich pay ore streak in this fissure has an average width of about six inches the metallic values occurring in a quartz which carries and considerable free gold seven shipments of ore have been made from this fissure which has been drifted upon for feet these shipments averaged according to control as says in gold and copper to the ton the gold values exceeding while one of the consignments consign ments went gold 7 ounces silver and 89 per cent in copper to the ton this ore when broken is easily stripped from the walls of the fissure and no difficulty is experienced in sorting as the pay rock is so easily distinguishable from the dark diorite and walls indeed the ore in place gli glistening stoning in the candlelight candle light like white marble is a beautiful and fascinating sight the main shaft is feet deep with a sump below from this level the main mine workings are to the south where three dif mense body of low grade oxidized ore has been passed through that assays essays in gold to the ton on an average outside investors have obtained a higher average than this and it may go more if this deposit carried values of a dollar or so more it would make a great cyaniding cyan iding proposition as water is available and every convenience is at hand for successful and profitable operation on other claims of the consolidated groups considerable development and exploratory work has been done amounting to several thousand feet and with most satisfactory results t mine equipment J the machinery equipment of the consol jj jefferson is all on the jefferson an andja new state groups and consists of a shaf house two boilers one of 55 and the others othe of 85 horsepower one 10 on a producing and paying basis provided that tha t the development work now in hand proves the existence of fine bodies of pay ore so confidently believed by the management to exist at greater depth a condition that surface droppings crop pings and mine workings most clearly indicate mr air nicholas the manager at j NO N or 70 7 44 A VP ANN DAY shir T AT THE consolidated JEFFE for the company has been hard at work rounding founding out the companas comp anys large and valuable holdings for the past nine years he was there before the new state was discovered he was there during the gold excitement of 1894 and for years with his family lived in a cabin on the josephene Jose josephene plene group working single handed and with the aid of his children who worked at the windlass or pushed the wheelbarrow wheel barrow he ran tunnels sunk shafts and made open cuts aggregating hundreds of feet and during all this time he e has never for a moment lost faith in ile he ultimate outcome of this section being firm in the belief that the day would come when great and producing mines would be developed eloped in the properties there in which he was so heavily interested and in the development of which he has spent so much tinie me and money the eagle mine near gold hill has been bought of james braden and john graham by new york parties the consideration is most of which is cash down that the new owners mean business is evidenced by the manor maner with which they are taking hold A crew has already been set to work in the mine under the management of E W lillegram the eagle will be well developed and equipped it has been an important surface gold producer for the gold hill district the golden drift mining company is laying its pipe line from the power dam across rogue river to the placers of the company in the dry diggings a mile distant four turbines which will generate over horsepower have already bene set and connected centrifugal pump will be and one big the pipe is down and in place by the time |
