Show launching of the santa maria few items of interest in the mining field during the year 1904 equal in importance the organization and development of the santa maria group of mines in sierra madre mountain this property as it now stands is a consolidation soli dation of the santa maria group proper the new york group and the vulture group in all fourteen full claims don maguire who has been in charge of this new work of development for more than four years has striven to bring about this consolidation in order to muster under one head the area of mining country known as santa maria basin in which exist the system of veins that show up so strongly in the present santa maria consolidation the metallic values of these minea are gold and copper in the veins below ohp th quartzite nuart zite and silver lead leaa ores in the eldorado vein also part of which runs through ohp eastern portion of the pro property nerty As now org orna nied there are three immense lodes on the western part of the group known as the santa maria new york and contact coneset lodes elc each h of which be able abl to contribute wealth for the me nver average asre really rood mine the santa maria rises rise on the contact of the quartzite zite ma P nipsy and runs through t the he prop for t nver vp s R fot fant this iq I 1 a strong vein fifteen fet feet in width along alone its course and widens out near the contact to more than forta feet its values value are in conner from 5 to SO 10 dar cent zold sold from 7 to 20 and silver from 5 to 40 ounces per ton the new york vein I 1 ii a copper copner bearing lode ivans ivan nl most horizontally rising at the quartzite 51 5 1 pontacq pon eon tact its conner values run from sixteen to eighty fent feet in thickness and that it lies within this property for a distance of feet one can faintly realize the im of the tonnage presented within the boundary lines of the group the contact vein to which each of ohp above mentioned veins loins Is itself one of the most extensive contact veins over ever found in utah the values exist in gold bearing copper ore chiefly sul Tb ldes and running in value from 3 to 15 per cent copper with additional values in gold and silver this vein carries along through the santa marla maria group for over feet and will be opened by vein development carried forward from the santa maria and new york lodes to which it loins there is a fourth fissure vein known as the north parallel copper lode lying feet north of the santa maria ode lode this also loins joins the contact at a point north of the santa maria juncture with the quartzite contact vein in few cases in any mining region do we find such an extraordinary association of strong veins as exist here and cutting these veins there Is a very strong dyke known as the eldorado dyke DOP which Is itself mineralized 0 t a great degree and with copper especially at the points where it cuts the above men tinned veins the surface conditions here are such as to render tunneling the ideal method for the opening and development of the property as in driving from the points on which work is being done a depth of 1200 feet will be gained at the contact the present points of work are one upon the santa maria lode and another on the new york vein A tunnel Is being run to cut the new york copper lode feet beneath the outcrop and on the santa maria a tunnel is being driven to open the vein for a dist distance anee of feet at which point it will reach the contact vein thence it will be driven along the contact vein through ore feet until it reaches the north copper vein A third working is planned to run along the dyke feet to where the dyke cuts the santa maria vein thence turning on the santa maria vein feet to the contact where a depth of 1200 feet below the surface will be attained the distance to the santa maria workings to the railway at hot springs is only two miles down hill the entire dit sance and the dis annee to the smelters shelters sm elters in salt lake valley Is fifty two miles when opened up to shipment this group from the workings thus planned in santa maria basin can forward an output of tons of ore per day from the two main workings alone it Is estimated that fully 40 percent of the ore extraction of these mines will be a straight smelting smelling sm elting ore the remaining 60 per cent being concentrating ore for which there Is ample water in the canyon immediately below the mine for nine months of the year all mining districts have each some pecullar peculiar feature in sierra madre district the strong and interesting features are dykes and reefs of and garnet crossing the santa marla maria group there Is a reef or lode of garnet fully fifty feet in width this Is a garnet running as a gangue through a friable white quartz associated with this garnet there is much in small crystals and in the rocks adjacent we find much actinolite and olivine with magnetite quite generally distributed through these C country aunt ry ro rocks C k S santa maria basin should soon become the second copper producing district of utah and promises to become one of the most important in the state the work of opening and development Is being taken hold of in a most conservative way with no indebted nes perfect climate cheap transportation and nearness to an ore market the santa maria may be looked upon as one of the most promising copper and gold properties opened in utah since the discovery of the highland boy at bingham for a property of this magnitude the capitalization has been placed at a low valuation the be I 1 company compan y being ng ancor borated at shares ot of a par value ol of 1 each and of this are in the treas ury for development the individual stock is pooled for a period of two years |
