Show RUINOUS MINE management many years ago in lander county nevada an old prospector had the good luck to strike some very rich pockets of gold ore in the surface workings of his mine and after shipping a few carloads from his find he found that he had something like to his credit elated with his good fortune he decided to make a visit to his old time home in missouri he spent money freely on this trip and he gave the farmers of old missouri massou r some idea of what is meant by the term a high flyer upon his return he brought with him a lot of missouri corn huskers buskers hu and employed them as miners as he could get them to work cheap this was his first great mistake as cheapness and inexperience go hand in hand in the wrecking of a mining enterprise he realized this fact after it was too late to profit by his experience but meanwhile poor success attended his efforts as no more rich pockets were found and before long he had expended in fruitless labor and search all that was left of the nice little fortune he had previously made he then decided to build a mill tor for the treatment of the low grade ores of his mine and borrowed for this purpose payment of the debt in full to be made within twelve months instead however of putting an adequate force at work on the installation of the plant so that it could go into commission within a month or two he em aloyed only one man and it took this r man one full year to complete the works arid and during this period instead of opening nn the ore measures of the mine so 80 that the mill could be run to its full capacity why wh completed he had only about tons oa 01 the dump ready for treatment and but very ven little more in sight in the mine by thi the time the mill was ready to go into coar commis hiis sion payment was due on the he had borrowed not being able to pay even the interest on the suit was cora coa fenced judgment was given and the prop erty was sold to the mortgagee at sheriffs sherif fIg sale and the mine owner lost all for years the mine which is really a good one has been closed down with to DO one but a watchman in charge not so very long ago a passerby passer by stopp stopping ng at the mine mille which is in an isolated locality found the watchman dead in his cabin and in the stable were his two horses which vh ic h had p perished r through starvation this is not a very cheerful story but it fully illustrates a condition that invariably follows bad management it is true nevertheless th eless had the original inai owner of this mine been a man of good judgment he would have been more careful of his small fortune even though it came to him easily when it finally did come instead of bringing to the mine a lot of men who knew nothing at all about mining milling he should have given employment to two or three really good experienced miners he made a mistake when he decided decided to build a mill when he had no ore reserves in sight he also made a mistake in not thoroughly prospecting his property during the period of mill building and he disclosed gross ignorance in business affairs when he employed only one man in the building of his mill when he should have rushed the work with the greatest possible speed his first good fortune probably turned his head and the wheels thus set in motion buzzed ani and buzzed until at last he found himself bankrupt without a cent and without a foot of ground which he could call his own |
