Show ITEMS OF INTEREST ABOUT THE CAMP george H wyman who is accredited with making the checkmate and Is now making a mine of tho the margaret is a former utahn having been an Mer curite the checkmate concentrates carry 35 per cent iron and from 2 to 4 per cent silica making an admirable smelting smelling sm elting proposition ion much sought after by the smelters shelters sm elters one oi of the interesting features of the checkmate ores which are characteristic of the ores of the camp is that they carry less than one per cent of moisture the ore being absolutely ab sol free from pores among some of the rich values taken from the surface workings working of this camp it might be mentioned that only two years ago three men worked worked four months and made a cleanup clean i up of over out of the easter property pro perty the horse shoe property is a group of claims owned and being worked by benjamin hall and others it adjoins adjoin the Ahe osborne mine and has a fifty foot shaft from which ore carrying 40 in values to the ton has been ex extracted tr acted the failure to mention a number of the smaller but promising properties in this issue is due to the fact that it was intended to have the pearl matter appear in the following issue in the rush to insert it in this issue much was unavoidably omitted which will abear from time to time in future issues the mining review is under many and lasting obligations to postmaster H E richmond his very obliging and efficient assistant L R walter H W dorman and others for information conveyed and favors rendered to its business manager W H korns while in their hustling little mining camp and town of pearl last week the intermountain inter mountain electric railway company of boise idaho W N donaldson manager and secretary proposes to construct an electric railroad from boise to pearl via boise valley through star middleton and emmett a distance of thirty miles over a road of but one and one half per cent grade all the way excepting a short distance up the canyon to pearl which will be little more than two per cent the company is already practically financed and power is being contracted for pearls permanency and substantial growth is evidenced by the recent erection of a four story hotel structure of magnificent proportions two complete local and long distance telephone systems the recent completion of an electric light and power line into the town and camp and the almost sure introduction of an electric trolley railroad into the town by one of the three companies now striving for the right of way and power to say nothing of the gigantic ore bodies recently opened and the mills contracted and to be installed last week ex governor govern or george W peck of wisconsin made a visit to the osborne mine the property of the idaho gold mines development company situated on horse shoe bend of the payette river about thirty miles north of boise of which company he is the vice president the gentleman was very much pleased with the splendid showing of the property and carried the news of what he saw back to lits neighbors and friends who are in the property with him A mining review representative was present and can also testify as to the merits of the property since the recent law became operative in idaho prohibiting the use of gasoline of lighter than degrees the standard oil company refused to supply the demand and the law became almost prohibitive this however stimulated those interested in the development of the camp and caused the building of the electric power line from the plant of the payette river light and power company and which will hate hale the tendency to introduce electric drills the development of the camp heretofore being ent entirely frely by hand drilling it will also cheapen the cost of operation pearls present postmaster H E richmond who is engineer at the margaret hoist and one of the pioneers in the camp was instrumental in putting in the first mill in the camp and treated the first ore from the easter claim now a part of the dewey property this was a 22 ton lot and yielded over 2400 free gold the concentrates going to waste five tons from the judas claim made a cleanup clean up of 1485 on the plates ore taken from the crosscut cross cut at 80 feet depth on the same claim ran 65 per ton on the plates ore from the whitman property in those early days ran 65 in free gold in the richmond mill adjoining the blue bucket on the north as yet undeveloped is located a agro group jup of nine claims owned by the idaho belt gold mining company L ltd td M C kimball of pearl idaho manager the company company is composed principally by caldwell idaho and chicago people and they have some of the choicest ground in the camp which is most favorably situated as regards the electric power line and a never failing supply of water for milling ore the c concentrates anc en of which will be shipped over the dewey road oad which is to be extended in the very near future e to the horse shoe bend of the payette river and run within a mile of this companas comp anys property the lucky ridge mine on crown point about a mile northeast of the town of pearl has a hoist equipped with a 22 horsepower gasoline engine and a modified cornish pump which is operating through a foot shaft there being three shafts from fifty to feet in depth tapping a veritable cluster of veins of the true fissure variety W H myers and H G williams of salt lake city are interested in this splendid prospect which is being pushed on its develop ment and revealing excellent showings in values the erection of a mill on the lucky ridge is already under consideration and is expected to materialize in the very near future dr J W hamer of johntown johnstown John town pa and who is luckily the only public official who survived the awful flood calamity which befell that city a few years ago accompanied ex governor peck colonel george W dorsey a mining review representative and local residents of boise into the pearl mining camp of idaho last week and was very much impressed with the splendid mineral showing and indications to be observed on almost every hand he is interested in the osborne mine of the idaho gold dixi mines les development company and went all ov over the property viewing the surface showings and the the underground workings taking samples from the mine which averaged better than 30 per ton one thing as much as any other one thing possible to instill confidence in the permanency and future of the camp is the renewing of the work on the dewey property consisting of five claims namely the iron dollar easter judas shamrock and dynamite situated on the hill a few hundred feet above the town of pearl all these claims have been worked and proved of great value but for reasons known only to the dewey family have been allowed to remain idle for a considerable time recently however E H dewey has set aside it is said for mine development and the work of installing machinery is now going on and before a month workmen will be driving ahead with rapidity 0 T D poston is working a group of claims part of which are patented in deep gulch on the north side of crownpoint crown point for lot L feltham of weiser idaho work already done consists of a 60 foot shaft a foot tunnel and a foot tunnel and a foot tunnel A four foot vein has been crosscut cross cut in the foot tunnel there are four ledges crossing these claims the largest of which produces galena with gold which is tapped in the foot tunnel there is ore in every opening the property has shipped ore and there is now ore on the dump only a single shift of workmen are engaged but it is proposed according to rumor to construct a deep working tunnel and convert the property into a regular producer and shipper postmaster H E richmond a typical earnest thrifty and persevering new englander who was one of the first pioneers to break into the camp and frank staats have two claims the midnight and primrose on which they have a tunnel feet this property lies directly east of the checkmate which is under bond to S L thompson of the blackfoot mining development company the tunnel mentioned has cut three veins the largest of which is four and a halt half feet in width with average values of from 10 to 82 the owners have worked faithfully on their tunnel work as best they felt able for four years and are now almost ready to reap the reward of their labors the four and a halt half foot ledge was cut as a stringer six inches wide but widened as stated with fifty feet of drifting A huge forty foot porphyry dike cuts the two claims their entire length and parallels the veins this is regarded as one of the most valuable prospects of the camp by reason of its present showing as well as because of its enviable location |
