Show activity in idaho campa 1 K the spiel mining correspondence kovier if i i Is maile lei 01 1101 boise ida july 10 1903 from time to baime time reports of discoveries of coal in paying quantities have come from various places in southern idaho but up to this time little attention has been directed to the development of this particular branch of mining ining ln in the state the little that has been done in this line has been accomplished by private individuals without capital no attempt being made to produce coal in large quantities quantities uan or to test the merits of such claims daims although there are several localities ha n which surface indications are such as to justify justify the belief that large bodies of coal of lair air quality would be found at no very great depth in lemhi leahi county near salmon city is a mine which though worked on a small scale produces enough coal to supply the local market another about eight miles from emmet in canyon county has been wor worked lied in a desultory way for some time no attempt being made to develop the property at depth the coal dug from the surface is somewhat inferior in quality but commands a price in the local market sufficiently remunerative to demonstrate that the property could be profitably worked on a large scale it is encouraging to note that capital is at last becoming interested and the resources of the coal fields of idaho are to be tested in the near future A syndicate has secured 1700 acres of coal land on the middle fork of the payette in the vicinity of garden valley and preparations are being made for a large amount of development work which it is believed will result in opening up extensive coal mines in that section THE DISTRICT work has commenced on the placer claims of the caribou mining company in the he old caribou district in bingham county this property which consists of about 1400 acres of ground on mccoy creek twelve miles south of snake river has been in litigation the past four years the casse casie being finally settled and the property placed in possession of J S thomas of chicago who originally purchased the holdings about six years ago the placers of the caribou district are very rich but owing to the expense of getting water on the ground little work has been done except on the claims owned by mr thomas on these claims about has been expended in development and improvements the old gold camp of rocky bar in elmore county is not behind in the rejuvenate i ing n g process which ha has s again brought so many of her sister camps to the front after an extended period of comparative inactivity the old elmore mine one of the most famous properties in the state and for many years a heavy producer the ore being rich as well as occurring in large bodies is to be reopened by a pittsburg company irvin E rockwell who has been so successful in reopening the minnie moore mine in the wood river district is managing the project the elmore was compelled to close down when the lower zones were reached owing to the fact that the ore at those depths had not been oxidized and it was impossible to work it at a profit by the methods then available now that successful methods of treating such ores are available however there is every reason to believe that the mine will equal its former record as the mine is as rich at depth as it was on the surface I 1 the greyhound district is attracting widespread attention this is one of the many new camps in the thunder mountain region and is rapidly being prospected and located the greyhound mine is being developed by a tunnel which has been in ore for a distance of feet the ledge being about ten feet wide and the average value of the ore being about 40 per ton assays essays running about 35 in silver and 5 in gold A twenty stamp mill is soon to be installed at the lost packer mine the plant having already been purchased and shipped from san francisco it will be equipped with an amalgamating plate four by feet in dimensions each of its five stamps will have a separate mortar so that different ores can be milled at the same time it is intended as a preliminary sampling mill not only for the lost packer but for the loon camp in general FRED FLOED |
