Show IN CLOSER TOUCH the action of president kingsbury of the university of utah in enlisting the services and goodwill of prominent salt lakers in the sports and athletics of this institution is most commendable as such a course on his part is sure to result in bringing the university and our people into closer touch with each other in bringing about a harmony and unity of feeling and operation cooperation co that will undoubtedly make us all take a more loyal stand when matters pertaining to the university are under consideration or discussion it was a wise move on the part of dr kingsbury to invite such men as D A callahan of yale dr charles G plummer of the northwestern R C channing of princeton george A eaton of harvard and frank anderson of michigan to act as an advisory board in connection with the athletics of the university as all of these gentlemen are advocates of clean sports and what is more they all won renown and distinction during their college days on the fhe gridiron the diamond or on the track and although they are not now in active service they are as enthusiastic as ever and their experience in sporting matters as above outlined will enable them to give pointers and suggestions that should en able the hill boys to play in the role of champions hereafter the mining review is pleased that the president of the university has thrown down the bars in this respect that he has adopted a broader policy in regard to university sports and that he has interested with him for the good of the cause men of such prominence as those above mentioned our chief pleasure in this connection however arises from the fact that this course will have a most beneficial effect upon the state school of mines so closely associated and identified with the affairs of the university utah is a great mining state and for this reason the state school of mines should become one of the strongest and one of the most influential institutions of this character to be found in this or any other country but it can never hope to achieve this proud distinction unless it has the hearty operation cooperation co and moral support of the big mining men of the state unless a friendly feeling exists between the school of mines faculty and student body and the leading mining men fillmen mill men metallurgists geologists and the prominent mining operators of salt lake city and of utah with a bond of interest of good fellowship established between the state school of mines and our most prominent mining and technical men much good will result to the former to the great satis satisfaction fac ion of the latter and the way for this is paved by the action 0 of f president kingsbury in selecting the gentlemen above designated as advisory board in connection with university athletics from the university to the state school of mines is but a short step if one becomes interested with one he will necessarily take an I 1 interest i in both if R C channing the mechanical engineer for the highland boy smelter once enters cummings field with the university boys he will also take a deep interest in the state school of mines and eventually he will say sa to principal joseph F fl merrill here I 1 want to take your classes through the highland boy smelter and he will take them too and he will show them one of the finest plants of this character to be found in the west frank anderson prominent as a mining engineer will insist upon having an outing with the state school of mines students and will show them the practical side of mining engineering other prominent mining men and engineers seeing the growing interest being taken in the affairs of this institution will vie with each other in showing the students all that there is to be seen in the mining and milling in austry of the state A F holden a prominent college man and a lover of outdoor out door sports would undoubtedly throw open the great united states mines for their inspection spec tion and what they would see in this wonderful property would be a revelation to them george dern of the consolidated mercur gold mines would gladly show them eherd the greatest cyanide mill and reduction works to be found in the mining regions of the west and the result of this interest of this good feeling on the part of min mining ingmen men would be that almost every spare moment of the students of the instructors and of the principal of the state school of mines would be spent in mine and mill examination in the inspection of great wealth producers of mammoth smelters shelters sm elters and reduction works of mines and prospects in almost every portion 0 of o the state and in consequence the school of mines would grow in influence and importance until every citizen every business man and every mining operator would point to it with pride and say it is a home institution ution and the best to be found in the world |
