Show the vindicator gold and copper mine A mine is neer so good as that which goes beneath an iron hat the above translated from german could not have more aptly applied to the vindicator mine had the author been using that property for his subject germans recognized the importance of the iron hat more than a century ago and prior to his death the late wil bur C knight distinguished geologist and mineralogist of wyoming wrote to the mining review saying my advice to the copper prospector is to look for the iron cap the iron cap is what don maguire refers to in using the cornwall term gossan in his hi s report en cn this vindicator property THE vindicator GROUP the vindicator group of ten full size mining claims containing acres lie in birch creek and byrnes the prominence of their bold outcrops are in distinct evidence from ogden city and far beyond as they protrude from the surface on the mountains point A VISIT TO THE PROPERTY A recent visit to this property by a mining review representative revealed a marvelously large showing of mineralized the middle vein has not been prospected but the south vein in byrnes canyon is known as the copper vein and to which the frerman quotation especially applies as it is a huge vein of copper bearing ore in granite overlaid with schist and with the gossan or iron hat capping the vein this iron characterizes these ledges DEEP WORKING r k 4 77 4 4 V 6 04 m L Z ok one of the tunnel workings Wor kinds on the vindicator canyons on the western slope of observatory mountain ogden mining district weber county utah and from its high eminence overlooks the city of ogden about seven miles distant and the great salt lake many times farther the property is traversed by a system of veins numbering not less than three traceable from several thousand feet to a few miles entirely across the companas comp anys ground from end to end and rock the veins of which measure from eight to fifty feet or more in width and the outcrops of quartz are so monstrous as to be lost in sight as veins there are three veins paralleling each other in a northeasterly and southwesterly direction the north vein in birch creek canyon being the narrowest and richest it Is a gold vein about eight feet wide carrying values from to 40 per ton and averages about 18 13 T U N N EL STARTED having prospected the copper vein the company has ceased further exploitation and commenced a deep working tunnel below water level at a lower point to crosscut cross cut the vein for purposes clustered in a beautiful and picturesque cany canyon on with an array of fragrant and blooming shrubs and steep mountain s sides ides towering far above and at the very mouth of a gushing spring of pure cold water the company has erected substantial quarters for its workmen and less than yards below selected its site and started its lower lovier working tunnel giving all facilities for dumping ground and an easy ingress from the villey valley below by wagon road the tunnel is within two miles of uintah station on the union pacific railroad and a much less distance to the electric power line which can be util zed by the company when it desires to install power drills and mill equipment while the gold vein of birch creek canyon shows richer values the company company is so sure of opening up a monster mine of copper ore that all work has been directed to the byrnes canyon side and many advantages for favorable mining and conditions for mineral are evidenced in the formation the veins and dikes the continuous water flow for power and milling purposes ingress and egress by wagon road and lastly the forest timber on the ground in trees towering more than feet high which will yield more than a million feet of merchantable lubber is a feature of itself of no mean importance while the north ledge is gold of free milling or cyanide ore the copper ledge on th the south is a concentrating copper product being what is termed a low grade milling prospector the tale of the early history of this mine and its former operation later on it fell to pe he good luck of george F busch of ogden after much search and research to study out the story so strongly graven in the veins and ledges of this section and which are so prominently in evidence within the boundary lines of the two and a half miles of ground now owned by the V vindicator indicator company it is also told of I 1 these old spanish miners that they found float ore in the creek that ran as high as in gold to the ton and extensive prospecting has demonstrated the fact that this rich float could have no other source than the great vein of the vindicator group these early miners succeeded in locating this vein but on their departure kept the secret securely locked in their bosoms thus the knowledge of the existence of this gold producing region was of no avail to AAA 00 r W 5 1 wag 7 ot k A 47 grea great t quartz ledge and on the ore which will concentrate ten or fifteen into retarded by somebody or for some motive it has been so with this property and its discovery dates back to the time when the mormon settlers invaded the salt lake valley when branish and mexican miners were mining the ore from the gold vein of what it now the vindicator property in birch creek i canyon and drawing the ore to the rudely constructed roasting furnace at the mouth of the canyon where it was first treated by roasting to be treated afterwards by an nearby both the oven and the in dilapidated and ruined condition still being in evidence to tell the miner and mankind until the treasure vaults now environed i by the vin vindicator decator side and end lines were rediscovered discovered re by the present president of the company mr busch ADMIRABLE LOCATION OF THE PROPERTY the vindicator group is most admirably located in the wasatch range of mountains and upon a great mineral zone whose mines have produced their millions in the past to the south is the great dividend paying camp of park city while to the north is the sierra madre district whose huge veins productive of copper and gold give promise of great things for this richly mineralized section that the vindicator contains large bodies of shipping and milling ores there can be no question of doubt all big mines owe their source to large and permanent veins and usually require extensive opera tion and the installation of heavy and exten efte sive machinery in the case of the Vin dica tor however but little machinery equipment will be required in its successful develop ment and exploitation as the operation of the mine is a simple tunnel proposition embodying the most inexpensive method of mining and this system can be applied in the working of all the companas comp anys veins in both canyons that rich placers exist in birch creek canyon no doubt exists but the investigation and operation of this additional source of wealth has not been seriously considered by the company up to the present time later on this feature of the proposition may be taken up and acted upon the vindicator gold copper mining company is off officered leered exclusively by ogden citizens mr george F busch chief of definable and traceable tra cable on the surface for great distances by their bold and prominent outcroppings outcrop pings is only a prospect as yet in the eyes of its management and no other claim is made for it and yet nearly all of our splendid dividend payers of today were once nothing but prospects and scores of them had less surface showings and less promise for the future than has this prospective wealth producer the accompanying halt hait tone illustrates but one of the giant ledges which outcrop so boldly on the companas comp anys holdings the lively quartz of which carry enco encouraging metallic values at almost every point and opening along their course at the place so vividly shown in the illustration the vein outcrop measures hundreds of feet in width and can be traced for a great distance up and down ane mountain side |
