Show IN THE DEEP CREEK COUNTRY F J gundry in stockton sentinel 01 A good deal has been sa said 1 d bout about a a ra railroad 1 I 1 to deep creek via dugway and fish springs mining districts and very recently it was about assured that this country abounding in mineral wealth would get one which would provide means for cheap transportation of their ores to market and in return supplies to the mines this is the reason the writer was sent to deep creek to inspect some mining claims for capitalists dugway leaving the ruins of the old dugway smelter where now stands an old style hand jig that had been recently used in turning out some fine lead concentrates while the water in the old well could be obtained we journeyed up the canyon west erly into the main mineral zone stopping first at the great silver king mine owned by the four metals mining company and being worked under the direction of george L moats this property shows up well and has a trainload or more of lead silver ores on its dumps and volumes of ore in sight in the mine on up the canyon to the black maria claims on the summit which is being worked by angus M cannon and others A recent strike made in this property exposes a fine body of copper gold ore we saw a specimen of galena ore from this claim that weighed about sixty pounds down the canyon westerly about one half mile is the ocean group now operated by colonel charles H characteristic te of the colonel who knew what the honerine mine in stockton needed depth and not wondering that these ore bodies could not make already sacked up a cedar tree so that a man could drive a wagon under and load as some of the surface rooters are continually doing in all the districts along this route he commenced to do underground mining and with his usual success has placed this group in the front ranks its present showing of cop per silver gold ores is immense this is only mentioning a few of the claims in passing through this district that it will make a good tonnage camp for a railroad there can be no doubt fish springs the in this district looks good and I 1 need not spend time in stating that the mineral output from the utah mine speaks volumes for itself as well as for the district but when we think of the expense for freight and cost of handling the ores of this mine to market viz about 20 per ton and know that she pays dividends from the profits from her ore sales we must say it is a remarkably good piece of property put the great silver king mine of park city in its place and the dividends would not astonish the world as they do today so much for the high grade ores of fish springs district clifton district the most varied indications of mineral wealth that I 1 ever saw sav are exposed in the network of mineral bearing veins traversing the entire clifton district this includes droppings crop pings of iron quartz spars of different colors some liberally copper stained yellow chloride ores with galena galena and carbonate lead ores copper and lead ores gold and copper ores free milling gold quartz ores arsenical ores sulphide ores etc etc the surface showing in this district would certainly justify any one in stating that great mines will be the reward of well directed efforts in developing this apparently inexhaustible field of mineral resources I 1 could write a volume in my crude way of the inducements and possibilities this district offers to capital ests but so much has already been said ln in its favor by such eminent mineralogists as professor marcus E jones and others that my expressions as a practical miner would be light that the clifton district will be a great producer and afford enormous tonnage for a railroad is beyond the shadow of a doubt |
