Show I 1 the great divide mines pine canyon I 1 IUM Q Q U MW all wm vava U wm M paralleling the great wasatch belt and separated by only a comparatively narrow valley is the oquirrh range presenting a series of lofty hills and mountains deep canyons and many gulches in all of which as we all well know dame nature hatire has been prodigal in her deposits of the precious and baser metals in the oquirrh range almost within a stones throw of salt lake city is the magnificent though ancient camp jot of bingham whose mines in the past have produced their millions and whose old time producers rejuvenated by extensive and systematic development are now in a fair way to more than eclipse their splendid records of the past As a matter or of tact fact the activity at bingham at the present time is something wonderful to behold A number of big reduction works are now being installed there and the copper belt railroad is being extended up carr can fork gulch and will lie be a brisk competitor with the aerial tramway of the highland boy while its main bingham canyon branch is already a formidable rival of the aerial tram of the united states company formerly active mining operations were largely confined to main bingham canyon UP to the highlands now however carr can fork gulch is coming in for its full share of recognition n and operation and near the head of this gulch an almost separate and independent mining camp has sprung up during the past few years it is here that the utah con the highland boy wan its mammoth machinery equipment is operating and from whose large tonnage quarterly dividend disbursements of are regularly being made here H er also al s 0 are the mines of the boston con the bingham con the yampa the utah apex and other mines of promise and note nearly all of which are extending their main workings westerly into the mountain towards the pine canyon side of the range LOCATION OF THE GREAT DIVIDE on the north side of the west transverse range of the oquirrh mountains and in what is known as pine and dry canyons in tooele thoele county and just over the divide 15 from the great highland boy mine in carr fork gulch bingham is located the great divide group of forty claims cla iniz including fractions the group embraces acres and extends feet on the strike of the main ore channels of this section of which there are nine in number all of which have been prospected and developed sufficiently to determine their 9 3 pt great divide boarding house tunnel house and blacksmith shop extent value and continuity the 9 roup group will average feet in width and besides the east and west ore zones ones embraces three weh defined de finetT north and south f fractures rac tures or fissures the smallest of which is sixteen feet and the largest seventy feet between walls the veins all being highly mineralized mineralize dt much of their product being shipping ore in the crude while a much larger amount is a good milling proposition the ni nine n e e east a st and west veins on the surface range from four to thirty five and forty feet in width and most of thera them yo so far as proven by superficial development will carry values averaging from 4 to 60 to the ton in silver lead copper and gold A large number of these veins have been extensively developed on the carr fork side of the range and on a number of them are some of the greatest mines to be found in the magnificent m mining ining camp of BI bingham ing liam for instance the utah consoli dated highland boy the utah apex the york petro and phoenix veins the bingham eastern and the old venus some of these ore channels having been worked up to almost feet from the great divide end lines notably the utah consolidated which is now taking out a tonnage of over tons a day of ST 9 and 9 ore within a short distance from the great divide and it is known and has been practically demonstrated that this wonderful ore zone passes from the utah con into and through the extensive holdings of the great divide divi de company geology and formation the general formation of the great divide section is cambrian limestone and quartzite the vein gangue is porphyry and altered lime stones the ore occurs as a sulphide and carbonate of lead and as a sulphide and carbonate of copper some little native copper occur prove ments on the great divide are of a most substantial nature the main building is ninety six feet in length and is about sixteen feet in width a portion of the structure being two stories in heights heigh tb th the building contains twelve rooms in which are the boarding house kitchen office and living rooms of the superintendent in the basement there is a storeroom feet in dimension much of which was blasted out of the solid rock in addition there is a good blacksmith shop with which is combined the tunnel house there are other out buildings included in the list being a i powder house reet feet trestles timbering for ore houses etc the ore bins to have a capacio bof 1500 tons in the way of development the spring or lower tunnel is now in a distance of feet this is a fine piece of workmanship and is 4 by 7 feet in the clear at the start this tunnel was driven in on the I 1 7 7 R entrance to spring tunnel freaa divide mines ring in the crevices silver occurs as a carbonate bona ite chloride and in a sulphide state gold is found in all the ores in its varied forms iron occurs in vast chimneys in a carbonate and oxide state there is probably no other group in the whole country carrying such a diversity of ores orea the east and west veins are all practically contact lodes with lime for for the hanging and quartzite for the ma main in foot walls their line of strike is magnetically east and west with a dip to the north of from 30 to 45 degrees the north and south veins are fractures cutting the regular formations at nearly right angles and at their intersection with the east and west contacts form immense ore bodies or concentrated cent rated zones these veins or fractures dip to the west at an angle of from 45 to 60 degrees developments and improvements in the way 9 pt buildings etc the im hanging wall of the main north and south fracture of the range and of the group for a distance of feet because of the fact that it was found that work in the vein necessitated heavy timbering throughout the course of the tunnel was slightly diverted after the foot maric mane was waa reached and it has since been run in the massive inas sive limestone comprising the country rock although at no point is thy tho tunnel workings more than twenty five flie feet from the north and south fissure which it now parallels the face of the tunnel is fissured red and seamed with white spar and iron indicating the near approach to one of the east and west veins and it is believed that within the next fifteen or twenty feet this vein will be encountered and that a fine body of ore will be uncovered and this at a vertical depth of feet from the surface when this connection con is made a drift will be run on the vein to the east to its inter section with the north and south fracture bract this work should be accomplished within a month at least when according to an all indications and estimates the mine 4 take rank as a steady producer ana shipper on the great devue group there are seven other inclines and tunnels ag aggree gregat at ing feet of work and all showing ore the main workings of the group however will probably consist of a double compart compare ement tunnel to be started on OIL the northern end of the group just above the old star mill the mouth of this tunnel will be 1800 feet distant from the entrance to the spring tunnel and will have a vertical depth below the spring tunnel level of 1052 feet this main tunnel will be run in on the big north and south fracture and will crosscut all of bf the nine east and west veins already mentioned within a distance of feet and will tap the extreme southern east and west vein at a vertical depth of 27 2700 00 feet and 1700 feet below the deepest workings on this vein on the carr fork side of the range this tunnel in its course will cut the utah consolidated vein feet below the deepest workings of this great dividend payer and by the way the utah con company is estimated to have ten million tons of pay ore blocked out and in sight in its mine workings the main tunnel of the great divide also will cut the utah apex veins at a depth of feet below the deepest workings of that company in the way of equipment for this tunnel electrical and steam power will be installed alid and machine drills will be used the main or lower tunnel site is admirably located being but a short distance above the valley on the tooele side of the mountain and can be easily reached dy a spur from the main line of the san pedro los angeles and salt lake railroad from the tunnel site the great divide hash has built t two WO I 1 miles n iles of fine mountain road much of which necessitated heavy rock work this road has been extended a mile and a half from the spring tunnel to the bingham copper boy mine in addition the great divide has constructed a mile and a half more of trails to the different claims odthe company and to the tracts of fine timber embraced in the holdings of alje association besides this the company has obtained an ali option on acres of land in fine canyon a short distance below its property which will eventually be used for mill smelter and townsite purposes water and timber on the great divide group there are five fine springs bi besides tho the water flowing out of the tunnels which will furnish a water supply adequate for all the purposes of the company at the present time or in pros ped tive another most desirable feature ol of this enterprise and a most important one also is the fact that on the great divide there is an abundance of fine amder almb ero it be ing estimated that the company nas running feet et of mine timber standing on its of this in all probability possessions are feet that is adapted for etere here saw timber besides which there is fire wood in abundance in variety this timber consists of red and white pine balsam and fir it is all above the mine workings delivered wherever desired and can be easily development and company incorporation from the first inception of this mammoth enterprise but little has been said spring tunnel building IN and nd blacksmith shop concerning the he ultimate objects sought for for several years past the principal owners have been quietly working and at great expense expense have succeeded in getting together this magnificent aggregation of min eral bearing claims and have expended about in their improvement and in the erection of fine mine buildings mine development and in the construction of wagon roads it was not until everything sought for was accomplished and until everything was ready for extensive and systematic operation and development alf that at A sinding si timberon Tim beron the greela divide group an all organization was perfected for the more successful carr carrying king out of the great project so long in contemplation this organization known as the great divide mines company filed its articles of incorporation a few days ys ago its capitalization being placed at shares of a par value of 5 each shares of which have been set side aside for treasury purposes the officials of t the c company in their personnel embrace some of our best business and pro fess ional men henry A mccornick mccomick Is president walter A cooke vice president and manager joseph H hurd secretary rodney T badger secretary and john B taylor superintendent A representative of the mining review revie w visited the property of the great divide a few days ago where he was most hospit hospitably abl y entertained by superintendent taylor and his charming wife having often heard of this property the mining review man was most agreeably surprised at the amount of work already performed in its development and exploitation as well as at the many natural resources and advantages at hand for its economical and successful operation the buildings are substantial and arranged for convenience and comfort the view from the spring tunnel dump is superb as one can look down pine canyon and over in the valley below and see a portion of the great salt lake in all its magnificence in almost every opening ore is to be seen and in pleasing quantity while along the mile and a half of dugway comprising the wagon road the great mineral bearing zones of this section are exposed in several places for many feet in width while the contour of the mountain is such that great depth can be obtained by means of tunnel operation another feature of this enterprise that is calculated to impress the visitor is the fact that there can be no doubt but bilt that the great ore bodies being worked on the carr fork side of the divide extend through the mountain to the pine canyon side and if these are developed by long and deep tunnels the results obtained must surpass the most sanguine expectations of the most enthusiastic admirers of this portion of wealth producing domain the enterprise is a feasible one and legitimate from every point of view when the company has developed its property to the extent already planned there is no reason why it should not find itself in possession of as big a mine as is to be found among any of ginghams Bing hams cluster of bonanza propositions ions as the pine canyon section is part and parcel of the extended mineralized zone which has given to the west some of the greatest mines to be found in this intermountain region |
