1001 WI 1 I oleo i within the past year the indian creek mines have undergone a wonderful transformation E ever ver since the michigan syndicate began operations eighteen months ago the treasures of these hills have been revealed with the magic of aladdin Ala adin the purchase ox OL the kittle kittie burton group followed by the addition of the ulysses group of mines has placed under control of this company thirty four mining claims approximately acres containing the largest bodies of free milling ore yet revealed in this county in th ulysses mines are exposed tons of auriferous quartz which conservatively estimated will wiil yield 8 to the ton in the kittle kittie burton are also immense reserves of ore which are practically untouched the lemhi leahi herald has often referred rei Te erred to these deposits which command the respectful attention of mining men everywhere ery where but t ts s is the first time the district has been personally inspected by one ot the publishers it is a bright spot in the county whose success in the production of values is fully assured J H rice R M edwards and R L edwards mining men of michigan are entitled to the lull credit of starting starling this enterprise in lemhi leahi county they bought the kittle burton group in july 1901 and ane industrial movement which has grown to present proportions they banked strong on the future of indian creek and spent their money without alint until february last anen the ulysses was purchased they proceeded wl wi bout outside assistance then they organized and incorporated the kittle kittie burton gow mines company a stock concern which has since stood back of the work R L edwards a proficient young mining engineer nas lias personally directed everything that has been done he has demonstrates signal ability as a general manager combining with a wide range of scientific knowledge a sound practical ai mind full of business the past year has been one of high pressure for him and the manner in he has met and grappled w i situations often under adverse auverse and discouraging conditions shows him to be a natural master of occasion he has made a commendable record the kittle kittie burton gold mines company has prosecuted A vigorous campaign and the progress made in this isolated country is phenomenal within the year they have erected a 15 stamp mill constructed a large flume put up nearly a mile or of aerial tramway and built houses enough for an embryonic town lolether gether jio Lo with these enterprises terp rises the company aas aas been the heaviest supporter and promoter of the new indian creek road which without this backing would not have been begun work upon the mines too has been persistent and continuous the ulysses mines bilich are now supplying ying ore tor the mill are looking setter jetter today than ever before the ven is a contact between a hanging walt wall of porphyry and a foot wall of slate its strike is east and west and its dip about 10 degrees from the horizontal oriz its contents are a sugary quartz sta stained ined with oxidized iron measuring 3 to 30 feet between walls it is prospected by two main tunnels the upper one is feet in the hill and wholly in ore after the first feet the lower tunnel is almost feet in length and is all 11 under ore after the first feet in this tunnel at a point feet from the entrance a raise was constructed which crosscut cross cut the vein and found the ore body thirty feet in thickness the two main tunnels have been connected by subterranean ways and extensive exploitations by drifts cross cuts and levels have been made to ascertain the magnitude of the ore body in each tunnel several have been opened and the extraction of ore is by the cheapest and simplest method possible dan kane is foreman of the underground workings the new 15 stamp mill is beautiful in construction and perfect in operation it is provided with blake crushers three batteries of stamps and three wilfley tables the stamps of two batteries weigh pounds each those of the third 1000 pounds each the whole is driven by a 35 horse power high speed engine exhaust steam from the engine is used in inclement weather to heat the mill which stops at no DO time on account of inclement weather the mill takes care of about f fifty tons of ore every twenty four hours the ore which has been running is the lowest grade found in the mine being a portion of what was passed over by a former company as being too low for treatment in their five stamp mill it was necessary to extract this ore first in order to make room for future operations it is averaging en cn tile the plates wi alien eli they commence feeding the mill wit with average ore they will easily clean up 1 a I month the concentrates cen which ar are e bearg saved by the wil fleys aleys sample about 13 a ton and the tailings r run un about 50 cents a ton gold from the ulysses is very fine minting about 1850 per ounce the company has been especially fortunate in securing the service G of walter J joy 0 Y and chemist his work a practical assayer is reliable and his judgment first class during six months of assaying for this company his check of the ore treated differ differed ed I 1 only 77 cents a ton from the actual mi mint nt returns with such a servant in the office a mining company knows from day to day just what it is doing he has sufficient experience peri ence in mine and mill to be entrusted with almost any department ot the work the flume supplying the m ml 1 with water is a plain box feet with a grade sufficient to carry miners inches it is feet long and at its lower ter terminus minus affords 92 feet of head this flume will soon be coupled to a large pelton motor and within 90 d days a ys the mill will oe ne driven by water power with such a plant the company will have sufficient power to operate 50 stamps if they desire to do so by which they will be able 1 under present conditions to save about a month in fuel and labor the tramway systems are operated by gravity that coming to the mill is feet in length and carries sixteen buckets each holding pounds the lowest span or 01 this rope system crossing the gulch is 1280 feet in length an auxiliary tram of feet connects the upper tunnel of the mine with the upper terminal of the main tram the buckets dump automatically and can deliver tons of ore every twelve hours it is the most modern improved tramway in this country and its work is perfection itself the auxiliary tram was completed only about two weeks ago the mill was started up on the of last month and its equipment of machinery is entirely new but everything starts off with clockwork precision and gives the owners flattering hopes of future rewards they have now about thirty men on pay the company owns and operates its awn sawmill a machine having a capacity of about feet a day besides the water power to be installed in the spring the company is already working toward putting up A cyanide annex with which to treat their concentrates this will be operating in the early months of 1903 the kitty burton group of mines lying on the opposite side of the creek is in the same formation as the ulysses with a similar strike and dip but apparently upon a different vein the has been followed by an incline shaft in the bottom of which is exposed a large body of sulphide ore sampling a ton this is an excellent concentrating ore ya yielding yie luing concentrates worth 50 to 60 a ton it can be cyanided at a nice little profit the mine is opened to a surface depth of feet and the vein is persistent a contact between slate and porphyry A working tunnel has been started to tap the vein at a depth of feet it will have to be driven about seventy five feet farther to strike the vein nothing is being done upon it at present |
