Show A MINING INSPECTOR INSPECT ORr rahe present session of the state legislature will probably take some action in regard to the passage of a measure providing for the appointment of a state mine inspector bilat there is urgent need for the establishment of such an office domce hardly anyone will deny such an inspector however should have nothing to do with the inspection and examination of coal mines and his duties should be exclusively confined to the metal bearing mines of the state the experience peri ence training and education of a coal miner would hardly mix well with requirements associated with mining for the precious and baser metals and vice versa at tae present time the office of coal mine inspector already exists but it would be a poor policy to vest in this officer the authority to appoint deputies whose duties it will be to inspect and examine metal mines the two offices should be separate and distinct but both should exist as they are an imperative necessity in these two branches of mining which are as different from each other in the methods employed as black is from white with a metal mine inspector in the field the danger of accidents and casualties would be greatly reduced provided the legislature enacted laws regulating operations connected with the mining industry the death rate in our mining camps could undoubtedly be greatly minimized if protective legislation were enacted and strictly enforced and utah as a state should follow the example of sister commonwealths in this respect |
