immensity and ric henss of the great mizpah mine that it seems almost a presumption and a reflection on the intelligence of the average person who has kept well posted on the events of the district to state that the half has not been told yet such is the fact and it is safe to say that ninety five per cent of the population of tonopah To most of whom live within a stones throw of the property and are in daily communication muni cation with those who are employed about the mine have no more than a passing conception of its true worth and capability justice cannot be done the property either by the pen or voice it is too great for that to truly appreciate its worth and extent requires personal inspection and even then after passing through its maze of shafts dinzes and drifts one is left as if in a dream wondering if the shoots and chambers of ore radiating as it were with infinitesimal specks of pure metal actually exist the miner has endeavored to keep apace with the development of the district and tao to keep its readers posted thereon but it must admit that so far as the mizpah is concerned it has been remiss and it never awakened to a full realization of its shortcomings in this respect till tuesday when its representatives taking advantage of the courtesy extended by T L oddie manager of the tonopah mining company spent two profitable and entertaining hours inspecting spec ting the mine to enter into a technical and detailed description of the mine at this time would take more space than the crowded columns of the paper will permit even though to do so were within the ability of its writers so what was observed and absorbed in our wanderings through the mine will be treated only in a general way the main triple compartment shaft of the mizpah is now down feet here one crosscut has been started to cut the ledge and another runs off to tap the valley view or feet distant one hundred feet above at the foot level drifts have been run in on the ledge for several hundred feet either way and all the work has been kept at least six feet wide on an average and the entire space between the sides has been blocked with ore at some points in the drift either one or the other of the walls can be discerned but in most instances one is surrounded by ore on all sides in fact in many places the drifts have been widened to twelve or fourteen feet in an attempt to locate the walls and in only a few cases has this been accomplished the ore found in III this level is the richest ever opened up in the mine vast quant ites of it running into the thousands per ton and on an average it will touch pretty closely the mark the values gold and silver are about evenly divided though on the surface and down to the foot level the silver predominated at the ratio of 2 to 1 showing conclusively that as depth obtains the gold rapidly increase more development work has been done on the foot level than in any other part of the mine the east drift is now within feet of the end of the claim and is being pushed in ore the ledge is heading in A a direct line for the silver state the ad joining claim on the east going west on the same level the drift is following good ore and pointing towards the buckboard the claim adjoining it on the west and whose end lines it will soon penetrate the total length of the drifts on this level is something over 1600 feet every inch of which shows ore running in values from broin 40 up into the four figures the ledge at this depth is not so wide as in the foot level but it is no exaggeration to say it will average at least eight feet the work done in this drift has developed one very important fact and that is that the ledge extends far beyond a perpendicular drawn from the ends of the surface crop pings another important discovery developed in pushing the east drift on this level was the opening up of a blind ledge dipping under mount oddle oddie which when crosscut showed the marvelous width of sixty five feet and carrying values from 5 to from the foot station a crosscut has been run south feet to coneck with the valley view claim another company property this was accomplished some time ago and in the running not less than a score of veins were cut all carrying gold values on none of these has any prospecting been done the object of the crosscut being solely to secure ventilation but when the means are at hand to reduce the ore these innumerable veins which vary from two to ten feet in width will be opened up and worked on the foot level drifts have been run east and west from the station and some fine bodies of rich ore have been opened up above this point considerable has been done the work of the leasers leaders and from it was made the record of 1901 much of the ground still remains intact however and when the extraction of ore begins in earnest it will produce an amount of money that will be a revelation to the mining world in all it is estimated that feet of work has been done in the mizpah of which probably two thirds has been done on the 1 ledge thus opening up the mine to a degree w where its value canant b be e underestimated and when its capability of prod production action atthe at the present depth is put at the lowest estimate yet made the ore is there to substantiate the statement the mine is well timbered and ventilated throughout and is as safe to work in as any mine in the state the men employed employ pd are th the ebest best that can be found and none of them get less than 4 per day the management too is above the standard and can compliment itself that it is not only doing its work in a first c lass class and systematic ma manner but it is opening up ud what promises to be the richest mine in the world THE TO RESUME at a meeting of the mcnamara company held recently in san francisco a contract was entered into between the company and henry C cutting and clay peters by which the latter agree to sink the pre present sent working shaft to a depth of 1000 feet crosscutting at that depth and also at A P kanters the well known mining man will have charge of the work to do the work contemplated tem plated extensive hoisting machinery will be required and with that end in view peters and kanters will leave tomorrow for reno to place an order with the nevada engineering works I 1 it is the intention to put in a 50 h p steam engine and the gallows frame will be arranged so that a cage can be used in hoisting it is expected that the plant will be in in place and active operations begun within forty days from flate date TONOPAH UNION the rich ore found in the tonopah union shaft at gold mountain at a depth of eighty feet and reported in the miner of last week still holds out in fact as depth is attained it grows richer the last assays essays showing gold values running f from roin to to theton the ton the main shaft is now down nearly y feet and the ledge between walls is eight feet the gold to all appearances is thoroughly distributed in the ledge and much of it can be seen with the naked eye the tonopah union is a good property and will make a big mine talk of putting up a mill is already being indulged in by the company owning the property and it is more mor e than likely that something will materialize teri alize the only thing that now stands in the way is the lack of water which sooner or later will be overcome MONTANA TONOPAH on monday the town was thrown in a flurry for a time by the announcement that a big strike had been made in the montana tonopah ground on oddie mountain inquiry developed the fact that in sinking in the main shaft at a depth of feet the shift at work cut through a four foot booi ledge of v vein eln matter assaying from 10 to 20 per ton the strike caused quite an advance in montana tonopah stock and wednesday it was was sold on the streets as high as per share but subsequently it fell back to l 1 where it now stands no prospecting other than sampling was done on the newly found ledge so its value or extent will not be known till it is cut into again by means of a crosscut MORE CLAIMS SOLD on saturday last T J lamoureaux of oakland cal closed a deal by which the aspen black diamond and san sabe claims located about a mile northwest of town and presumably on the strike of the big ledges passed into the hands of a philadelphia company the consideration was the new owners will commence prospecting the ground at once by means of surface crosscuts cross cuts and on a favorable showing will begin a double compartment sli shaft aft the claims were formerly the property of hasbrouck everett and finney and were sold to mr ta lamoureaux last summer TONOPAH CHIEF the tonopah chief company whose property consisting of five claims is located east of that of the mizpah extension a little over a mile from town is preparing to put up an extensive sinking plant the machinery for which has been ordered development has been progressing on the claims for some time past but on the arrival of machinery the main double working shaft will be pushed to a depth oi of feet when crosscutting will be proceeded with FOUND A LEDGE on sunday last while excavating at butler wells four miles northwest of town for the site on which he intends to erect his mill waltr walter osborn opened up a two foot ledge of quartz encased in pretty solid walls assays essays of the rock showed values running lunning from to 10 in silver and gold the ground is the property of butler jenkins and lynch and has been leased to mr osborn for mill and water purposes LITTLE TONOPAH work is being vigorously prosecute J in the main double compartment shaft of the little T tonopah development company A few days since at a depth of sixty five feet a new formation of reddish gouge was encountered and it is regarded as one of the most favorable indications so far found in that promising property TONOPAH AND GREAT WESTERN the shaft which is down eighty feet has passed through the capping and is now in highly mineralized porphyry the boarding house bunk house and shaft house have hate been completed and the new hoisting plant will be installed immediately making the tonopah and great western one of the best equipped properties in the district 1 |
