Show I 1 ube scottish chief mine of scott hill J w t f f A A IJ C 0 r e s z 0 nd e n c 9 ahe E opinion has been expressed many times of late that the great bonanza camp of park city will ex experience perien a lebed prosperity in 1903 these statements have been made by men who are conservative in their utterances and by persons who have made careful observation of events during the past few months the same opinion of this great utah camp is shared in by the mining alining review revie W every indication goes to show tl that at these good g od things in store for park city will materialize mAter 1 ze there seems no escape from it coming forward a year ye ar hence with a marked increase in population and it seems certain that as a consequence of the vast amount of development w or ork planned to be done don the camp will regi register several new and regular brodu producers c e r s great mines would be found elsewhere in the district were scoffed at such opinions were classed as ridiculous but after awhile senator kearns and david keith and associates demonstrated that the silver kin king was a mine capable of producing untold millions the 3 gm g M a 41 a 1 1 Z tj u W N u ale st T T wonderful daly west the remarkable quincy the glorious old ontario and several others it was not so very many years ago that many chany people believed that the ontario mine was about all there was to park city it was said that to go outside the vast domains of tu this company any to search for ore was folly of abe worst kind ki n d some e who maintained that daly addly west and other bonanzas came forward in rotation with their great dividends thus completely exploding the old time theory that the ontario owned all there was worth having in the camp some geologists 1 who had bad given the t he formations of the district careful investigation and study stud concluded that the mineral zones of park city d do 0 not not stop in the vicinity of any of these s great mines but that they extend on through the wasatch Va satch range range of mountains 15 consequently entering the mining districts of alta big and little cottonwood and american fork canyon they seem to radiate too in other directions but it is pretty well conceded that these latter named camps form links in an unbroken chain of the park city mineral belt bev ev p in made in the past year have done much to demonstrate demo nitrate these truths and every stick of b blasting powder used goes just that much further to substantiate the claims set forth by the scientist entis t s and h d geologists one on part of the known as the yankee boy colorado boy denver girl randall and taylor lodes the ground around was acquired some time ago 0 by mr W J lawrence the well known salt lake mining man and it was th through rough his instrumentality that the org organization ini z of this corporation was perfected and e operations orations upon a soun sound d enabled to com commence commeria meric op financial basis associated with him lu in the enterprise is W V rice the park city operator who needs no introduction to the mining fraternity of the west mr rice is president of the company the other officers are hon G N lawrence treasurer walter C shoup secretary and will J lawrence vice dent and managing director the balance of the directorate consists of fred C dern bern frederick lyon and david B hempstead stead although the articles of incorporation of the new company were only filed on the dinst ast dst manager lawrence has succeeded in getting things in shape for an active campaign of develop development during the winter months and by the time spring comes again 1 lie he expects to have the interior workings of th ohp mine connected up the ore bodies blocked out ore bins and chutes constructed and things otherwise in shape for the tb e early inauguration of regular shipments to the valley smelters shelters sm elters among other improvements in contemplation is the construction of a tramway from the mine to the bottom of big cottonwood canyon from which point of discharge the ore can be loaded onto wagons and hauled down to the reduction works at a cost of 2 per ton or about the same expense that it would take to land it in park city for shipment from there by railroad Aft after erthe the tram is once completed at least the freight charges by rail could be saved which would amount to a considerable item A representative of the mining review visited the scottish chief mine last sunday in company with several others and found everything well advanced so that the oper aaion of the mine will not be hampered by inclement winter weather the employees are comfortably domiciled in a log bunk house feet in dimensions an addition to this is a dining room feet connected with a splendidly equipped kitchen fee feet t the store house is filled with supplies suf sufficient clent to last until next june on account of the trouble experienced in getting materials delivered some delay has been caused in getting the new shaft house under cover but by the time this paper reaches its readers it will be ready for ser vice the building will be feet in size and will house a 25 horsepower fairbanks aforge morse gasoline engine which is in place and can be seen under cover of canvass in the accompanying illustration A blacksmith shop feet feefe is to be built near the new shaft house at once the result of development work done since mr lawrence assumed charge of the scottish chief is exceedingly gratifying to him as well as to the shareholders of the company who recently paid the property a visit an incline shaft is down to a depth of feet at a depth of seventy five feet a 20 foot crosscut cross cut has been run out which has tapped three feet of ore fifty feet deeper the vein was cut again showing the vein to a width of about the 0 same as above it was in this crosscut cross cut that the accompanying flashlight picture was taken the vein is well defined and cannot be mistaken in the imprint left ba bythe the half calf tone engraving another crosscut cross cut is being run to intercept the vein again from the bottom of the shaft these cross cuts were run since manage lawrence assumed control of the property the incline was run by the former owners of the property but unfortunately for them they failed ailed f to get into or find the ore channels below these workings is an old tunnel which may some day be utilized to advantage in the exit of ores and the further development of the mountain sixty tons of ore has been taken out of the cross cuts off from the incline forty tons of this lot samples 26 per cent lead eighteen ounces silver gold 35 per cent copper and I 1 per cent zinc the remaining 12 tons ran per cent lead 28 ounces silver gold and 65 per cent copper this showing coming from a threefoot three foot ve vein in makes the scottish chief one of the most promising Promis inc in the camp upon the completion of the new hoist the sinking of the incline shaft to a depth of feet will commence this work will be run from entrance the balance being beina ant ru in barren ground owing to the lack of knowl edge as to the cross courses or faults alts in n vein As to the ninety foot mark the 0 from entrance there is a distinct calcite the th e q course which would lead to water wat 6 J continuance vein of upon my first examination 1 l took samples of the vein exposed to give a fair average ot of ore in sight and after careful tests testa obtained obtained the following 4 gold 39 ounces silver and per cent lead taking this as a mean average and putting the vein at its least width namely two feet you have forty tons tona in sight that would under present rates rate 8 n net et you since then I 1 understand you have made a shipment and that your official lial statement will show a far better return upon my second examination of the property I 1 found development in st opil easterly enough to increase the ore in 0 t to tons or a net profit after mining ha hauling ul and smelting smelling sm elting charges upon former average of therefore I 1 avoided all market able ores and sampled the waste and got the N A flash licht in tibb chief rho eving vieta and formation v rushed as rapidly as possible and to facilitate progress machine drills will be installed in the near future the mine can be reached over a good wagon road either from park city by way of T haynes canyon or from salt Lake City through big cottonwood canyon the distance from park city is about six miles from salt lake eighteen miles A few years ago the property underwent a critical examination by J M B parry a well ell known colorado mining engineer who was at the time managing the bonnylee Bonny bee mine one of the principal producers of the aspen district in his report to the owners lie he stated that bat at the junction of the four claims in the center of the group a mineral lode crops crops out in carbonate limestone dipping ar 25 degrees north with an easterly and west erly strike I 1 upon which an incline has bas been following average from dump and waste pile ounces 16 per cent lead 43 cents gold the silver and gold in this ore being contained in the mad makes this waste a very desirable gigging or concentrating ore and would leave a handsome profit after such treatment and your further official statements of shipments will verify the values of the vein you have exposed in the group of 01 claims and I 1 am now thoroughly convinced that this is a very desirable property as it lies in a direct line with the well known know mines of park city viz silver king crescent and others whose ore and forma formation tion is similar to your property and have proved with development to be bonanzas a and d I 1 an am saMs satisfied fied that with judicious management and will equal slid aa development your property produce as much wealth 4 as tb the Q giue are ady paying dividends 3 this opinion of mr parry as stated was expressed as far back as 1895 subsequent developments development indicate that his judgment of the property was sound and that with careful and conservative management such as mr lawrence will undoubtedly give it the scot ibish tish chief should become one of the principal producers of park city in july 1895 a pound lot of ore was sent down to the valley shelters smelters sm Em elters which averaged per cent lead 2680 ounces silver cents gold on august 12 of the same year pounds sent to the same place averaged per cent lead ounces silver 29 cents gold on october 18 another lot of pounds of second class ore averaged per cent bent ledd lead ounces silver and 10 cents gold t i compared with the 60 ton lot taken out of the lower workings of the mine recently it is P noticeable noti oti cable that as depth is attained the ores show a marked increase in value arrangements have been made to have bave I 1 the mine connected with the outside world by telephone so that the management can keep in n daily touch with the progress of development |
