Show I 1 UHE MINERAL RESOURCES OF BEAVER j QUARTER of a century ago when A mining 11 in this intermountain country was practically in its infancy in swaddling clothes as it were no section of our fair state then a territory was more popular with the small circle of of mining men operating in this country than was beaver county which at that time made boast of quite a number of producing and paying silver mines it was in this section that hon al len G campbell made fame and wealth it was here that matt cullen laid the cornerstone for a fortune that pat ryan built up a fat bank account and it was because of the wonderful record being made by the horn silver mine that the original utah central railroad was built south of this city to frisco ai at which place a number of smelters shelters sm elters and reduction works years ago were in in active operation on horn silver ores on the output of the carbonate and rattler and on the ores from the old cave mine besides treating the product of smaller mines in that locality at that time silver was all the rage and but little attention was paid to mines productive of either copper or gold As a matter of fact but little was known in those days about copper mining and low grade gold ores could not be handled profitably owing to the absence of any known process for the successful treatment of what we now dow term sec ond class auriferous ores later on the decline in lead quotations the of the white metal and the heavy expenses attending mining operations caused a close down of nearly every mining proposition in beaver county with the exception of the horn silver which ever since has been adding to the imperishable wealth of the world the world do move however and changed conditions in almost every branch of business and the wonderful demand for copper in manufacturing and electrical circles has caused an act activity privity in the search for the red metal that has had a st stimulating mulitin 11 effect on every branch of the mining industry and this change in conditions has resulted in a rejuvenation of the old districts of beaver county and not because attention is now being turned again to silver mining but because of the fact that in this section there are immense deposits of copper which years ago were practically valueless but bub which today offer many opportunities for the acquisition of almost untold wealth in fact there aw 41 uha WOE ak m avs y i tac bt fen lly rf PANORAMIC VIEW OF ROCKY MINING DISTRICT IN BEAVER COUNTY is hardly a district in beaver county and they are numerous that is not a perfect network of immense copper veins and leades the ores of which carry gold in goodly quantities as a product byproduct by A few years ago the mining C camps of the section named were dead to the world virtually abandoned they held out no promise of profit to the mining men until the marked advance in copper had its stimulating effect on many of the ancient districts in this western country and even then nothing much was done until A B lewis appeared on the e scene until he had resurrected more than one old mine and until he startled the mining world with a shipment of a trainload of copper ore fro from mothe u the old 0 K mine in beaver lake district disposing of the same for over net then it was that all eyes were turned in this direction the magnificent record made fiade by the 0 0 K causing a stampede to this land of promise the result of which is easily to tb be seen in the eager demand for promising properties there the resumption of development in many of the old mines as well as in new ones the organization of new companies on beaver county mines and prospects and the increased shipment of mining machinery and supplies into the various districts in this locality to say nothing of the number of men now employed there in prospect and mine development work perhaps no district in beaver county has been more prolific in the production of the precious metals than star and old star in these districts are located such old bonanzas as the harrington hickory the elephant the savage now known as the hoosier boy the burning moscow rebel delia dykes wild bird and Ka narra each and every one of which the mining review is informed can boast of a production of at least and several of these are producers still while none of them have been exhausted in addition to which new mines and prospects are much in evidence included in the list being the property of the talisman mining company co m the ground being successfully worked by the milford mining milling company the holdings of the gold king I 1 mining company the atlas the monte cristo the vicksburg owned by the majestic company the property owned by general penrose and the amelia and to such an extent has new life been infused into this grand old camp that at the present time at least men are now at work within its environments whereas two years ago it is doubtful if a bakers baker s dozen could be found scattered around among its hills and canyons san francisco district is another old timer of note and this camp has been prominent in mining circles ever since the discovery ais covery of the horn silver mine which since the first pick was struck into the ground in its development deve loument and operation has paid out over five and a quarter millions in dividends while other properties near neighbors of this wonderful wealth producer have also added thousands to the circulating medium of df the country it is in san francisco district that the imperial copper mine is located the royal is its near neighbor and so is the washington and blackbird the reciprocity being sandwiched san in between the horn silver and the imperial while to the east is the old carbonate and rattler an old producer of note now under bond and lease to dr P A H F franklin other properties of merit and known value bei being ng scattered all over the district which is now famous at home and abroad for its mammoth and almost unlimited deposits of pay copper ore this article is illustrated and embellished ava halftone half tone cut out of rocky district a re production of a panoramic photograph taken by hon ben T lloyd manager of the copper ranch mining company on the knoll to the right is the old hickory mine now owned by the majestic copper mining company from the center and extending to the east of the mountain and over the divide is the Montreal group grou 1 owned by the glasgow western mining company while joining the montreal to the left is the group of seventeen claims owned by the copper ranch company the old hickory was productive of considerable high grade rade copper ore some fifteen years ago the ledge covered by by this property is immense in its proportions being from to feet in width and the ore can be broken down in large quantities simply by quarrying the montreal is on an extension of the same immense ore channel the formation being a contact between lime and porphyry although some call the porphyry a specie of granite during the year 1900 the montreal shipped forty carloads of ore to its nevada smelter which averaged 28 per cent copper to the ton the copper ranch is on the northerly extension of the montreal and old hickory contact and carries with it the same mammoth bodies of copper ore other locations have been made in the district which is a copper camp pure and simple with some values in gold and silver this accounting for the fact that this section has never before been extensively mined as up to within the last few years copper has been a drug on the market adjoining rocky district on the northwest is beaver lake district the southern end of which can be seen in the accompany accompanying in illustration the 0 K raine mine owned by the majestic company and which created such a sensation in mining circles in this western country two or three months ago by the shipment of ten carloads of 40 per cent ore is in the southeast corne beaver lake district and it is believed that it is on the extension of the montreal old hickory and copper ranch ledge the ben harrison mine centers onto the 0 K group and its workings are 1600 feet from the 0 K workings on what it is stated is believed to be an extension of the 0 K vein in the same district is the skylark now under bond for and the beaver lake now under option to salt lake people the copper mountain is another copper mine of note while the wasatch and galena are very promising properties in addition to which many locations have been made all over the district many of which hold out excellent promise with more extended development the d district is is heavily mineralized and is covered with a perfect network of copper bearing veins and ledges t in bradshaw district we find the old cave mine which has produced upwards of a mil million lion in the precious metals and also the summit mine another ancient producer of note lincoln district is one of the veterans of the county and in this favored locality are to be found the rollins mine the december and the stampede all three of which have add added edthe their ir thousands to the circulating ium aum of the country and which are raed med good for many more thousands yet in the eastern por portion tion of the count county yar are q newton and granite districts both of which are heavily mineralized in the former to be found the rob roy the sheep rock are fawn tracks and other good properties of excellent promise while silver lead mines oi of merit are found in the latter there is hardly a district of import importance anc e in ill beaver county but which is tapped by the main line of the oregon short line ra railroad broad or its frisco branch and many facilities exist for economical and successful mining operations and the fact that so much copper exists in this portion of the state is having its effe effect t upon those seeking for deposits of the red metal |
