Show SALT LAKE CITY AND ITS COAL GAS SMOKE PROBLEMS E EVER VER since the proposition was sprung to pipe natural gas into salt lake and adjacent sections a pitched battle has been waged between the advocates advocates of the scheme and those opposed to it the coal mining interests representing millions of invested capital and practically inexhaustible haus baus tible deposits of bituminous coals and the railroads which transport this product to the local and surrounding markets markets have openly and with strong arguments protested that the introduction of natural gas from out state fields would so cripple and demoralize one of the states greatest stable industries and would so harmfully affect the carriers of this product the railroads that everybody in all lines of human endeavor would surely suffer and rue the day that the sought for na natural tural gas permits and franchises were granted during the last few weeks as a result of the numerous hearings that have been conducted by the state utilities commission much light has been shed on the situation and the coal interests particularly have advanced strong arguments to show that it is not at all necessary in finding 10 a solution of the vexatious smoke problem so called to advocate and encourage the introduction of natural gas in the more recent hearings it has been shown that it is not only possible but that plans are being matured which when carried out will insure a most perfect smokeless and high heat unit fuel manufactured direct from the coals produced in utah and that without crippling the operations of producers and the railroads the coal producing interests themselves have testified that plans are maturing and will surely be executed that will provide plants for the treatment of local coals that will insure a smokeless product and at the same time provide all the manufactured gas as a bi product that state industries will require or may demand in the future As the operation of such plants will utilize even a greater tonnage of raw coal than would otherwise be required it is pointed cut that it would be equivalent to committing hari kari to invite competition from the natural gas business promoters it salt lake city is about the most beautiful and desirable homemaking home making city in this western portion of the country but atmospheric conditions are such that during the winter months its beauty and cleanliness is marred by the accumulation of a smoke pall which nothing but strong winds can dissipate and these are unusual if the coal and other business interests can and will combine to relieve this condition and it is promised that they will during the next twelve months then the mining review wants to register its opposition to the granting of natural gas franchises to anybody everybody would like to see salt lake become a great home city and everybody un questionably would like to see it become a great commercial and manufacturing center we believe this can be accomplished and we believe our coal metal mining business and manufacturing Z interests will vill rise to the occasion and convert desire into reality |
