Show I 1 va THE NEW SENSATION IN HONEYCOMB GULCH VW lit N THE early days of mining history big cottonwood canyon was a star actor in fact next to bingham this is one of the oldest mi min ining ninino districts in the state being co and running mate of little cottonwood whose chief camp is alta the home of the great emma mine a producer so rich and extensive that at one time international strife was almost because of alleged crooked work charged by british stockholders the ultimate result being that this wonderful dividend payer has been closed down and idle for many years thirty years ago ago big cottonwood Cotlon wood was a booming camp numerous mine throughout M the district d i s t r i c t were extensively and profitably worked daily stage lines plied between thie thi city and the bonanza of thi locality and salt lake wa thronged thron ged with operators raining mining men and investor 1 who wept fairly wild ove the splendid opportunities offered in this section in thi th mining line at t that hat time the reed S S goodspeed was in actie operation and was productive of a royal fortune in the white metal the car a short distance below argenta to the summit of the mountain range along the different forks of the main canyon south fork was a favorite with mining men and so was bonev honeycomb gulch wh while ie promising prospects were to be found at every hand a feature of mining operations in those days being 0 the persistent search for high grade mineral silver being the favorite metal low grade propositions and copper properties being almost entirely ignored 41 F 94 M LAKE SOLITUDE ON THE NEW SENSATION GROUP bonate and rattler was making a name for itself and fat bank accounts for its fortunate owners the thor and bright point was in its prime the neptune was a producer and many other properties disclosed bright prospects for the future in fact active mining was the ord order pr of the day from the maxfield mine why i vas that mining operations in big cottonwood canyon almost wholly ceased for a while is almost unexplainable certain it is that the mines in that section were not by any cleans means exhausted while many faelli facilities ties for their extensive and profitable operation are offered the fact remains however that for a long period the mines were practically deserted although but a few hours drive from this city and easily accessible how long this condition will continue is problematical some day however important strikes will be recorded in this old and richly mineralized camp which will turn the tide of interest once again to the lofty mountains and towering peaks of this erstwhile bonanza land and then our mining minina men will realize the importance and magnificent resources of this region in its scenic beauty with w i t h i its t s mountain streams of purest water its lovely and enchanting lakes and its forests of gigantic 11 el pines is a rival of some of the famous pleasure resorts of this great r e a t intermountain region still some mining is carried on in big cottonwood at the maxfield ore shipments have continued for many years and in isolated cases assessment and other work is performed during the summer months but few men are generally employed in the development of prospects the largest force in all probability bein being at work in the systematic operation and development of the new sensation mine in honeycomb honey comb gulch or mill F canyon the new sensation group of four claims is virtually an old property under a new name as its title would imply the property embracing an immense ledge of low grade ore which could not be profitably worked CONTINUED ON PAGE FAGE EIGHT THE NEW SENSATION IN HONEY cofie GULCH CONTINUED FROM PAGE FIVE years ago under the old system of ore reduction now however with the new and improved process of treatment valuable inventions in the machinery line and with increased facilities for mine operation it is evident that the mine can be opened up and developed so that in the near future it can be listed with lono long r string of dividend payers and with this in view aglanao manager er A A brim is giving employment to a force of twelve men the 1 intention being aing be to increase this force from time to time the main tunnel in the new sensation has been pushed into the mountain a distance of feet gaining a vertical depth of nine inches for every foot the tunnel gains in length the workings have been passing through a four or five foot body of low grade ore for sometime but the indications are that within a few feet more another of those big chimneys of good mineral for which the mine is so justly noted will be encountered at feet from the mouth of the tunnel I 1 the bonanza chute was encountered this chute is eleven feet in width by thirty feet in length and it has been sunk upon to a depth of fifty feet the vein showing undoubted permanency with depth its exploitation at this point blocking out many thousands of tons of ore carrying average values of 12 per cent lead 12 ounces silver 1 in gold and 20 per cent zinc to the ton the forty ton chute or chimney is sixty feet further in at this point there is a two and a half foot body of ore the zone being fifteen feet in length it has been sunk upon and raised upon for several feet and shows values of percent per cent lead 28 ounces silver and 31 per cent zinc to the ton still further into the mountain eighty feet is chute no 3 which shows a body of ore two feet in width and twenty five feet in length the metallic contents of which goes 5 per cent lead 46 ounces silver and 37 per cent zinc these large chimneys are characteristic of the property and in each of them thousands upon thousands of tons of ore ot excellent milling quality are blocked out the mineral being susceptible of successful treatment by concentration and as the zinc is as valuable as the lead contents of the ore and can be saved separately the mana management ement is sanguine that with further development and the erection of reduction works at the mine the property can be made to pay regular dividends to the stockholders of the company on the eastern side of the mountain from the new sensations main tunnel there is a fine copper contact upon which great expectations are based on this side of the mountain a tunnel has been driven for the purpose of tapping the new sensation vein this tunnel is now in a distance of feet and according cording to measurements made in 60 feet more it will reach its objective point at il a vertical depth of feet below the new sensa tion tunnel the Mana hansett tunnel as the is above the called are east side workings copper contact below which is lake solitude embellishes this article a halftone half tone cut of which and it is here that the company p proposes ro to establish its mill when it has been decided to erect the plant this lake so properly named is feet wide by feet in length baidy bein t forty feet in depth at its deepest point A among monar the heavy owners in the new sensation are the brim brothers W J lawrence rence S S phippen and W T dinwoody of this city |
