Show OLD SPANISH TREASURE VAULTS the mining review is in receipt of a very interesting letter from dr C E watkins of boston ston president of the old spanish mines company owning property in the southern portion of this state which within its environments ron ments is believed to include several old spanish mines in his communication the doctor states that liis ilis company has just completed its organization with a capital capitalization bation of t shares of a par value of 1 I 1 each and that the company compall is meeting with no difficulty in disposing of the treasury stock shares at par or 1 a share the discovery of these old workings came about through information furnished by a grandson of a spaniard who assisted in their operation many years ago the doctor states that the old workings as are plain to be b e seen they consist of four shafts and one tunnel which are concealed by large stones arched over the openings by rough masonry work the shafts so far as examined having haghig regular stations and landings at intervals but as some of the workings have caved to some extent they are difficult and dangerous to explore the four shafts are in a line and cover the mineral belt for a mile in extent in these workings pieces of ore still cling to the walls and specimens taken when submitted to test by fire show values ru running anino ii into alto the thousands in gold to the ton the company has already put down three prospect holes ranging in depth from thirty to sixty feet and have obtained assays essays going from to 64 in the yellow metal to the addition to which string stringers ors of ore have been cut in these new workings which assay to the ton still of the low grade ti the ie doctor says we have a mountain of ore work in the operation of this ground has been at a standstill this winter pending bendin g the organization of the present company but now the review is informed orders have been given for resumption of operations and before the close of the year the value of the property and the claim that these are old spanish mines w will be fully established dr watkins is also president and general manager of the boston placer M mines ines on the colorado river this state and he states that it is the intention of the company to resume work this spring 11 with a large 1 dredging plant costing in the neighborhood of the success of these two enterprises will be watched with interest by the mining men of utah it is known that the sand bars and the bed of the colorado contain enough of the yellow metal to pay oil the national debt ten times over and that the spaniards mined in utah many years ago goes without saying I 1 as evidences of their operations here are to be found in many sections of the state |
