Show 1 MINING OUTLOOK IN COLORADO J J Guenther a well known mining writer of colorado and during the past year or two mining editor of the western miner and the herald democrat of leadville was idsall in salt lake city recently on a trip to the far northwest in an interview at the knutsford he had the following to say mining in colorado has within the past year assumed a very healthy tone and in al all parts of the state there is an enhanced interest in mining with a general revival and resurrection of old camps that had been abandoned during the silver slump while here and there chere some new gold districts are being opened up generally attention and energy is being directed to the exploitation of the older larger and proven camps such as cripple creek creede leadville and the camps of the old silvery san juan from the present outlook I 1 think colorado for 1900 will exceed in both tonnage and value its output of 1899 since about august 1st ast cripple creek has taken on a new spurt 0 of f activity that camp is a wonder it was a pay camp from the start and in many instances after the initial outlay of capital for the first development the mines from their own natural resources have furnished the means to defray the e cost ost for the sinking of deep shafts and prosecuting 0 from them development on horizontal lines at comparative great depth the ore that is typical of tho the cripple creek dis brict contains sylvanite and some of it exceedingly rich at depth the ore appears to be changing in character but the veins are strengthening if anything and the values remain good this is very encouraging and such men as stratton are seeking new acquisitions of mineral ground right along stratton probably owns more mining ground now than he did before he sold the independence the fine surface plants at the principal mines shows the confidence that the owners and operators have in the permanency or long life of the mines of cripple creek leadville is going it hammer and tongs in production and in new development never before has the camp been on such a substantial basis it is producing oodles of wealth and at the same time opening up a large area of virgin territory this latter is largely the extension of what is known as the downtown down town area several shafts are going down west of Har harrison rigon avenue to zet get at the horizontal blanket veins lying beneath the city at depths of from to feet some big strikes are likely to be made most any day in this new territory in the old district on carbonate and rock hills and in graham park much new work as well as production is going on the Wolf tone shaft commanding the A M W combination mines is being widened out to a triple compartment shaft and is to be extended down to a depth of 1500 feet in order to give access to tile several contacts between the and foot levels the ground is practically all ore the pumps for this mine cost in the neighborhood of manager sam D nicholson is making c a great success of the A M W combination propositions the mines under his manaa management ement make an aga aggregate regate output of tons per month in the leadville gold belt there is also great activity the ibex and resurrection mines being 1 regular and heavy shippers 9 and a score of other properties on breece little ellen printer boy and long and derry hills are coming into prominence as shippers the yak tunnel cutting through iron and breece hills is now over feet long leadville mines yield all kinds of ores the deeper contacts yield in the shape of sulphides sulp hides principally the upper are of oxides and carbonates the metals of the district include gold silver lead copper zinc zinc iron macanese mag maga anese bismuth and cadmium the railroads are extending spurs from mine to mine and the district is being grid ironed with tracks ore is dumped from the mine car right into the flat car thus doing t away to a large efte extent nt with hauling by wagons in the san juan country a phenomenal mine has been developed within the past two years it is the camp bird in imogen 0 basin about eleven miles from ouray the ore is a quartz containing free gold and gold tell urides a fissure vein in andesite the mine is currently reported to be producing a million a month but probably it is safe to say that from to per day would be a low estimate A large part of the output leaves the mill daily in the shape of bullion buchon there are mines in other parts of colorado comin coming r to the front with generous yields and mining mining in the we weis at is i proving a most attractive form of staple investment for capital the rocky mountain districts have the advantage generally of being beina near civilization the camps usual usually y are of comparative quick access communication is ready and with the fine climate so ubiquitous throughout about the mining can be conducted with comparative para tive ease the east is beginning to realize this and instead of sending capital to alaska and foreign countries the capitalist prefers the west where he can exercise a supervision over his investment that is one reason why more money is coming 21 to the west to aid in mine
