| Show AVALANCHE OF the profoundest sympathy of the people of utah and the mountainous mining districts of the state went out to the residents of the camp of bingham across the valley from salt lake when the news flashed out that a snow slide had bad torn its way down one of the side canyons wednesday a week ago and that before it stopped in the bottom of carr fork near the highway it had swept seventeen dwellings and a three story boarding house out of existence As this is written it is known that about forty persons lost their lives and the list of injured and missing is nearly as many more the slide which had bad traveled more than a mile from the starting point reduced most of the buildings building s in its path to kindling wood and counted in its toll the lives of men women and children who were up and going about their duties with no suspicion of what was going on until the crash came in some of the partially wrecked building fire broke out and helped to finish the devastating 9 work of the slide the snowstorm which brought about the catastrophe ranged all day tuesday and tuesday night and up tip to the time when the crash came about 9 wednesday morning but because bingham had been unusually fortunate in the past there was little fear that a slide of moment could or would occur in this instance however the rule that it is usually the unexpected that happens proved true and now the community suffers an irretrievable and staggering loss with characteristic promptness and an all absorbing desire to render aid and save the lives of those entombed and trapped in the wreckage the managers of the two nearest mines mines the utah delaware and the utah apex called out every man at work and it was not long until hundreds of willing hands were in the cause of rescue As the news spread throughout the district men in all callings joined the force and did everything possible to relieve the situation and administer aid and comfort to the afflicted nothing that could be done aone was left undone it was an awful blow but nothing could prevent it financial relief has since been pouring in from all directions ions the anaconda copper mining company was quick to wire the utah copper company the banks of salt lake and numerous other concerns and individual mining men and business interests have contributed liberally the governor and general manager cates of the utah copper were placed in harness to direct the raising and disbursement bur of funds and it is expected ex p acted that or more will be quickly raised |
