salt lake from his bo home near paris france early in the month after an absence of five years has secured an option on one of the richest mines in the state of sonora mexico preliminaries affecting the A transaction L have all been arranged and robert J glendinning am of this city has 2 gone to the property companied companies compa nied by mr newhouse s engineers to arrange rane ran e for the pumping out 0 of f the old mine workings during the period that the mine mine is is being Z mr New houses en engineers C inders will thoroughly sample the mammoth ore are dump and make an examination of the numerous stir surface face ope openings aings along the boldly outcrop pin ping 6 venis veins and lother otherwise wise dete determine amine the potential value of the property up to he point of making b the underground dero der ground round examination it is is expected that all of thin thib will have been accomplish SAMUEL 13 ed and that mr New Newhouse houses 9 engineers greers will have submitted the report on which the final losing closing of the deal will hinge before the end of august property involved involved comprises the el socorro mine and the el 11 socorro corro E extension at poza sonora embracing am ac res the mine is located miles south of nogales aria zona on the line of the southern pacific railroad of mexico and rail is ls reached by y a twenty mile drive over a fine road from the railroad the property is owned by the hubbard W reed estate est 1 ar aie 1 mrs w mrs R RJ J glendinning of salt lake city from whom that newhouse ous e will wi acquire title and ownership in the event the report of his engineers s is favorable and there is bothin nothing is is bei to indicate that at the report will be adverse in fact it believed that the engineers s will find that the value of the property for y ls 11 away ay and beyond anything that has been claimed husban it by 7 y mrs glendinning da sole heir of the estate and her t nd u the only people w with ith whom mr newhouse has to deal how the mines were acquired by H W reed eral in 1905 hubbard W reed of salt lake city was gen 0 ouray manager nager of the revenue tunnel mines company of pr 3 say colorado ado and at that at time with ii a change a of base in pee rt t 1 rated he e persuaded his mine foreman T rank frank W wilson a als one odthe of the best miners and judges of mine values in the state of colorado to go 11 1 1 on a scouting b expedition that was to cover the western mining sections of the continent from mexico to alaska and to report anything lie he considered worth while wilsons Wil sons pilgrimage 6 b took him into sonora where he became impressed with the wonderful potentialities of the el socorro mine after thoroughly b sampling the property and searching the records at mexico city for data of its production which showed that more than worth of ore had been sold lie he reported to reed that the mine could be bou bought lit and recommended its purchase mr reed bou bought ol 01 ht the property in the fall of 1906 and sent mr wilson wit with h a crew of miners to ta open up the mine and pump out the old workings with the mine clear of water the thousands of feet of drifts and levels down to the bottom of the foot shaft the deepest point at which the mine had been opened were cleaned out and put in in shape for mining za the showing was such that mr reed decided to sink the shaft deeper after sinkin sinking an additional feet a station was cut at the foot mark and a drift was run out forty feet through b h ounce silver ore at that distance four feet of ore was opened up tip that sampled ounces silver 19 lead and 10 in gold to the ton As a result of all this preliminary work of rehabilitation mr reed was enabled to ship several carloads of ore that yielded him a handsome profit revolution breaks out and mine is abandoned in 1908 just as the owner of the mine was getting ready to operate on a broader scale the mexican revolution broke out ott and the operating forces at the property were driven out without warning the property has since been inactive because of the unsettled conditions in mexico up tip to a year or two ago in the ine meantime antim e mr reeds health failed and just as he was hoping to resume work at the property lie he died this is the 6 situation as vouchsafed by mr glendinning previous to his departure for the mine a few days ago mine is rich dump worth 2000 in the crude operation of this property by the caquas and spaniards where ores had to be mined and carried up tip and out on chicken ladders and then tran transported d to market by burro and human pack trains it can be inia imagined ined that the ores had to be rich in the metals to yield to the owners more bior e than 2000 in recorded value and without mining deeper at any point than feet also it is not to be wondered at that the mine dump today is estimated to contain not less than tons of ore which the sain sampling pling b done for mr reed indicated would yield an average i of about 20 oz silver 1070 10 lead and per ton m irr gold at prevailing prices for the metals this would indicate a dump value of considerably more than this gross ore is mined and ready for treatment by some simple mil milling lingl process and the mine it is said is capable of supply supplying in all the water necessary for milling purposes this old dump it is contended can easly be made to yield a ner nee profit of more than without a pound of new ore oie from the mine mine workings all of which are said to be capable of generous production when a again ain placed in shape superstition preserved the mine according to legend and history the jaqua indian operators of the mine who were responsible for the work at al the depth attained eliminated themselves in the heyday of their prosperity A shaft has been sunk in the bottom of an aroya which cuts through the ground and while miners were at work in the deeper levels a cloudburst filled the aroya with water and debris the water poured down the shaft and more than sixty men were downed and buried beneath the debris and caving ground in the shaft no indian could be persuaded to go underground in the property after that eventually another shaft was sunk by succeeding interests with its collar on high ground a few hundred feet from the shaft in the bottom of the aroya ind and it was this shaft that was f finally reopened by mr reed and sunk to the depth stated up to the time he took hold of the property most of the work done consisted of gop hering along the outcrop of the veins near the surface these openings are numerous and all of them are said to be in ore even since mr reed acquired the mines nomadic prospectors and high graders have worked out cc stakes in the openings unmolested there are two parallel ledges running through the property one of which has proven its value in the socorro and the socorro extension while both have proven their richness in adjoining and adjacent properties some of which are operating at the present time and supporting a small village in the vicenty vici nty mr newhouse whose name is a household word in the mining regions of the west and who is known as a man who does thin thins things b s ri right 6 ht when the opportunity comes within his grasp is being upon his good luck in having this proposition presented to him at this time and it is freely predicted that he and those who may be fortunate enough to be invited to join in this new undertaking are destined to reap a rich reward during the next very few years |
