Show METAL MINING IN NEW MEXICO SLATED FOR substantial REVIVAL el paso tex feb 21 between and in round figures is the value placed on new mex acos estimated metal production for this year if the states metal production is forced to in 1924 says john H mcclintock and there is every reson to believe it will be it is safe to say that at least of the money will be paid out immediately for labor materials and taxes mr mcclintock adds that mining in new mexico is of the utmost importance to el paso as the production is almost entirely within districts of the state linked closely with the business interests of this city lie he quotes from reports of the united states geological survey in giving by counties the production in 1922 as follows catron county Mol logon produced 34 per cent of new medicos cos output of gold hidalgo county 28 percent per cent colfax county 19 per cent grant county 12 per cent and lincoln county 6 per cent less than 20 per cent of the gold produced in new Al mexico exico he said was mined in a county no now v almost entirely within el paso trade territory however when mining is normal in new mexico gold is a small part of the whole and the tale the figures tell as to other production is still more convincing silver is from two to twelve times the importance of gold varying with the volume of total metal production here is what the geological survey finds the prodoc production tion of silver to be by counties catton catron county Mol logon 43 per cent grant county 20 per cent sierra county 18 per cent hidalgo county 16 per cent here is 97 per cent of the silver of new mexico produced in sections having practically no other trade outlet except through el paso and of the remaining ng three per cent practically all of that was produced in socorro So lin coln coin and otero counties copper is the greatest moneymaking money making in metal etal in new mexico and to the production of the red metal the geological survey says that grant and hidalgo counties produced 99 per cent the chino being credited with practically the entire production with the concentrates being smelted smelter in el paso and other direct trade connections the metal production of new mexico in 1917 was after which the worldwide world wide depression in in min mining overtook the industry in the state and in 1921 it was reduced to the entire industry be being ing ir closed down part of that year and part of 1922 2 in 1922 it began to revive and in the last half of that year there was inar casing the go going ing to war activity the total production for year an increase of per cent over the previous year but in in a available official figures for 1923 are not yet preliminary bulletin issued for the first half of ahe year the ane revival of the in government was highly gratified at the thee austry in the state and predicted a still greater increase over 1922 than was shown for that year over 1921 L will wil show from available figures figure s it is believed 1923 a production of more than 1200 DI and P probably industry with every indication of 1924 restoring ing the to a production approaching i it of an increase in m P price rice earl spar in the world and as the demands of commerce for the mineral are steadily on the ind increase rease much is to be expected from that source of wealth new medicos cos amalgamating and cyaniding cyan iding mills in 1922 produced in gold from tons of crude ore or an average b of in gold from each ton treated and from the same sam e ore these mills extracted ounces of silver or an average of ounces of silver to a ton of ore the same average will probably carry on through the increasing production of gold and silver but copper production is on even a closer margin of profit than is indicated by the production of gold and silver the chino ores are under an average of two per cent copper and at the present price of metal it practically all goes for labor materials taxes betterments and the necessary expenditures the larger part for labor and materials although foreign quotations now control the price of silver there is a steady increasing demand for that metal and silver producing districts in the counties of hidalgo grant sierra catron socorro dona ana and lincoln are feeling the new activity while there is also considerable inquiry into partly developed districts in other counties the demand for gold properties materially increased the last part of 1923 and new properties will be placed in production during 1924 only thirty four deep mines and nine placer mines mines of the sta state te were worked in in 1921 and then but a few of them operated steadily in 1922 the deep mines had increased to ninety one and the placer mines to seventeen with an increased pr production of per cent in the latter part of 1922 the chino and other consistent producers sw swung ung into action new mexico production is the sort that is making trade as the ores are low grade in the larger mines and nearly all the recoverable values go for labor materials t taxes axes and general expenses paid out at the mine and but a small percentage of the whole goes into profits |
