Show 0 OIL NEAR thermopolis THERMO POLIS WYOMING most alost of the oil in wyoming occurs in arched beds or anticlines anti clines and domes and most of the anticlines anti clines or domes in the big horn basin in that state yield oil but two anticlines anti clines near thermopolis Thermo polis in hot springs 6 county known as the warm springs and hamilton domes were at first regarded as barren of oil because the beds they contain do not include the oil sands of the proved oil fields tests by the drill however have shown that they contain oil in commercial quantities the thermopolis Thermo polis anticline on which the big e horn hot springs extensive travertine deposits and sulphur mines are located is a strong of the earths crust extending northwestward for about 22 miles the warm springs domes which are about five miles east of thermopolis Thermo polis are near the east end of this anticline the hamilton dome which has also been called the cottonwood anticline is about 20 miles northwest of thermopolis Thermo polis just west of the west end of the thermopolis Thermo polis anticline from which it is separated by a low saddle the northerly dip of the beds in both the warm springs and hamilton domes is very moderate but the southerly dip is about 45 degrees the hard rock formations stand out at the surface as hogback ridges making the structure easily recognizable the oil sands in other parts of the big horn basin are cretaceous rocks but the oil sand in the warm springs domes is a bed in the carboniferous part of the embar group and that in the hamilton dome is a bed in the chugwater Chug water formation or red beds of triassic age descriptions and sections of these formations are given in detail in a report by A J collier published by the united states geological survey department of the interior as bulletin D the oil of the warm springs domes is like that of the lander oil field in the wind river basin a heavy dark brown oil having a disagreeable sulphurous odor and containing a variable percentage of water the oil of the hamilton dome is of better grade than that of the warm springs domes it contains about 6 pe cent of gasoline and lacks the disagreeable odor of the warm springs oil the warm springs domes have been thoroughly tested by drill holes the wells are connected with the railroad at thermopolis Thermo polis by a pipe line the oil is reached at an average depth of 1000 feet the total production of the two domes is given as about 1000 barrels a day the productive area of the east dome includes about 80 acres and that of the west dome which is separated from the east dome by about 1 miles of barren ground includes about 40 acres the report may be had on application to the director U S geological survey washington D C |
