Show F fatalities ata aties in in utah metal mines M ines the industrial commission of utah through its mine inspection department has given out figures covering fatalities in the metal mines of utah for the year 1920 there were a total of twenty six deaths but six of these were due to snow slides in the 1917 1918 1919 1920 av days worked per day av no of men employed underground open pit 1 1500 1437 surface 1 1194 1299 total total days labor 1 underground d open pit surface total number killed 9 14 1 14 22 17 underground 8 4 9 6 4 open pit 8 2 surface 2 total 24 26 28 15 26 A study of the causes of the deaths for 1920 shows that fewer men were killed from falls of rock than for many years but on the other hand the number of deaths due to explosives shows a very marked increase some of these were due to the carelessness of the men who were killed some were unaccountable and others were due to carelessness in driving away t the he fumes from region of alta and big cottonwood cotton wood and subtracting tr them leaves a total of twenty properly chargeable to fo mining operations which is the lowest fatality rate for the last five years with the exception of the year 1919 as is shown by the following table explosives which resulted in the suffocation of two men conditions condition s such as these could be avoided by more care on the part of mine foremen as well as the miners themselves in the smelting smelling sm elting plants of utah there were three men killed k ailed in 1920 as against four in 1919 and in the mills there were three men killed in 1920 as against one in 1919 |
